  1. Matt was a fellow med school student in my graduating class, and we worked together in several rotations during the clinical years.
Matt was such a solid guy, and he really cared about his work. I viewed him as a senior student, as he had a lab background that made him more practically knowledgeable than most of the rest of us. He was a big help to me, and was supportive of my decision to pursue internal medicine.
I’ll never forget how after staying up all night on an OB/GYN call, during a small group morning lecture I was falling asleep sitting in my chair; Matt kicked me from under the table to wake me up, and I opened my eyes, to see the knowing look on his face, protecting me.
What a good man, I knew he would become a great doctor.

    Rest in peace my friend.

  5. Dr. Sumpter was one of the first people I met when I moved to CO in 2000 with my company. I will never forget the kindness that he showed to me as I navigated my way around a new job and a new territory. He was always ready with a kind word of advice. Matt Sumpter was the epitome of living a live of purpose and leaving behind a world that is better because he was in it. God speed and rest in eternal peace. Job well done, Matt.

  6. To Dr. Supter’s family, staff and friends. He was my doctor since 1999 and helped me continue my life after heart surgery. Not only was he a great doctor, he was a kind and gentle man who always spoke softly, and advised you on your medical condition. Shocked when I received news of his passing. I hope he is resting in the hands of God. He will be missed by many.

  7. To the Sumpter Family,
We just received notice of our doctor’s passing from Pueblo Cardiology Associates. Our shock was very quickly followed by sadness, as Dr. Sumpter was a kind, compassionate, caring and thorough heart doctor. We will miss him in many ways…not the least of which was his personal, tender manner. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and staff.

  8. Diane, Brian, and Michael,

I was heartbroken to hear about your husband/father. My heart goes out to all the family–a family I remember from Connect as caring, fun, and kind.

Dr. Sumpter was my father’s heart doctor. Both my parents were deeply saddened at the news. Dr. Sumpter listened, laughed at my dad’s silly jokes, and continually tried anything he thought might make my dad feel better, all while explaining the medical details in words we could understand.

Our whole community shares your loss. Please know others are thinking of and praying for you at this most difficult time.

  9. My sincerest condolences to your family at this difficult time. I no longer live in Pueblo but worked as a nurse/NP for decades at Parkview Medical Center. Please know that he was held in high regard and an exceptional physician. I was blessed to know him.

  10. My condolences to your family. I remember Matt from our early elementary through high school days in Pueblo. While I moved out of state many years ago, I was pleased that Matt chose to return to Pueblo and serve the community in a myriad of ways. I always heard glowing testaments to Matt’s kindness and knowledge in his cardiology practice. He touched many lives in his lifetime. May you find peace.

  11. Matt made untold contributions, not only to the Pueblo community, but also to the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) community through his dedication to the health and well-being of those he served. He was essentially an unsung hero, fostering a very productive collegial relationship. We respected him tremendously and knew that he would make himself available for consultation at any time we needed to speak with him. As a respected colleague and a friend, we will miss him more than words can say. Please know that we are thinking of the Sumpter family at this difficult time.

  12. I always had the utmost respect for Dr. Sumpter. He was always so respectful of others. He was kind and soft spoken. He was always approachable and made patients and nursing staff feel comfortable. I was so deeply saddened to hear of his passing and will miss his quick smile. It has truly been an honor to work with him. My deepest sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.

  13. Dr Sumpter was my mom’s Dr for many years, and recently was also my wife’s Dr, he always had a way to make people feel at ease with their concerns in regards to their medical conditions, he was the type of Dr that I wish many Dr’s took as an example to be like him, our prayers are with his family and co-workers, may he rest in peace.

  14. We knew Dr Sumpter professionally. He was such a kind, gentle and nice man! It was an honor to know him. Always thought of him being like Mr. Rogers. We will miss him very much!
Our sincere sympathy to all of his family!

  15. To the entire Sumpter family –

Our hearts are with you. Matt was such a kind, lovely man and his loss is deeply felt by all of us who had the honor and pleasure of knowing him. We wish you peace during this painful time.

  16. With deepest sympathy to the entire Sumpter family during this incredibly difficult time. Matt was always so approachable and incredibly helpful to those of us who worked with him from the Emergency Department. He will be sorely missed.

  17. My sympathy on the loss of Matt. Matt was a member of our Pueblo County Beekeepers Association. He was a man that was thoughtful and kind and had a fine sense of humor. I didn’t know he was a Doctor. Very unassuming. Now that I know he was a Doc, I can see this in him. God bless you and your family.

  18. To the entire Sumpter Family, our thoughts and prayers go to you during this difficult time. Matt was a super awesome person, and when my husband and I were starting up our troop years ago, he gave us some great advice and mentoring. It was always a joy to run into Matt and catch up on the latest. We will greatly miss Matt, and he leaves a big void in the Scouting family. We are very sorry we could not make today’s service, but we are thinking of each of you. May God bless your family and give you strength during this time.

  19. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Matt Sumpter’s untimely passing. He was a kind and wonderful man, and he will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his lovely wife Diane and his sons Brian and Michael, of whom he was so very proud. Condolences also to his brothers Carl and Eric and his sister Linda.

  22. Dear Sumpter family,
We are heartbroken and in disbelief that our dear friend has departed this world. It is not surprising that every tribute posted reflects the same consistent message of what an amazing human being he was. No words can truly express the loss of a loved one, but we do know that love and empathy carries one through this extremely sad time. We love you guys and will never forget our dear Matt.

  23. Dear Diane, Brian, and Michael, please accept my most heartfelt sympathy at your terrible loss. Having had the honor, privilege, and outright pleasure to have worked with Matt the past 18 years, I know how much his loss will be felt, especially by those of his beloved family. Matt was a man of great honor who treated all who met him with great dignity and respect. He always had time for anyone with a need or a question, always worked until all was done, and somehow always had a smile on his face. His patients were lucky to have him as their physician, and all of us at Pueblo Cardiology were blessed to have him in our lives as a partner and friend. I will miss his smile, his pictures, his stories, and his very essence. I feel fortunate to have known him, and he will live on in the best of me.

  24. Diane: I was shocked to read about Matt’s passing. Those of us at St. Therese Catholic School who knew him are mourning the loss of a wonderful human being. I remember how he was at your side in every project we worked on together for the school – striving to make the school the best for your sons Brian and Mike and my four grandchildren. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside of you and get to know your family because we truly became one large family at St. Therese Catholic School. Your Mike and my Chase were buddies and continued on to high school where they remained classmates. My heart reaches out to you, Diane. Please know that you and the boys are in my daily prayers and I pray that God will give you the strength to carry on. Difficult as it will be, I know that Matt will be right there with you to help you cope with whatever comes your way. May the memories of Matt in your life sustain you and just remember – God is with you and will never leave you. God bless you, my friend. Angie Duran

  25. Diane, Michael and Brian: My thoughts and prayers are with you. Matt was a very caring, gentle man. He was a dear friend and I will never forget him… he touched everyone he came into contact with. His loss will be felt by all who knew him.

  30. Very shocked and saddened to hear of Dr Sumpters passing. I have been a patient of his for several years. I felt he was a good caring doctor and a very nice man. My thoughts to his entire family.

  31. Dear Sumpter Family,
I’m so sorry for your loss. Dr. Sumpter was a gentle, kind person, he was my hero. My thoughts are with you all. Rest in peace my friend.

  32. My family was so sorry to hear of Dr. Sumpter’s passing. He took care of four members of my family, including my 99-year old father. We all respected him highly. His sons were students of mine at Centennial, and I also thought very highly of them. Please accept my condolences as well as those of other members of my family. Our prayers are with you during this very difficult time in your lives.

  33. Dr. Sumpter was a genuine man and truly sincere human being. I really enjoyed calling on him over the last 10 years. I was devastated to hear the news that he is no longer with us and I am my heart breaks for his family and all that were honored to call him a friend. Although I never met his family, he never missed a chance to beam about them. He will be sorely missed.

  34. My deepest sympathy to Diane, Brain, Michael and the entire Sumpter family and colleagues. Truly words can not adequately express the sorrow we feel as we each reflect on our associations with Matt. We have lost a man who was not only compassionate, but embraced life and living. His love for the outdoors, his compassion for his patients, his mentoring to youngsters, and his desire for each of us to stretch and challenge ourselves; are only a few of the traits this man reflected to all of us who he has left behind. As I look at the many photos he has taken of the outdoors, I see his intense desire to capture that which his mind saw for all of us to enjoy, ponder, and be inspired. He saw in nature and in the people whom he met, a beauty that should be embraced and cultivated. He was truly an inspiration which our community will miss. May it be our challenge to live our lives with the same compassion and sense of purpose he lived his, and, as he did, inspire others to do the same.

  35. I had known Matt’s parents, Bill and Fae, who dedicated their lives to the drug store they owned in the Midtown shopping center for many years. During the years I knew them, they were two of the nicest people you could ever know. I later met Matt who was a wonderful doctor who dedicated much of his time with the Boy Scouts as a troop leader of Troop 30. I attended many meetings after getting my grandson, Davis, involved in the troop. Matt was an amazing inspiration to all of the scouts, imparting what seemed to be an endless resource of information that he shared with the scouts, Of course, because of his scientific and medical background, he was able to introduce the scouts to many useful subjects that they will use for the rest of their lives. Anything from knot tying, first aid, weather and any number of topics that will come in handy for anyone’s future endeavors. He was always able to mix in his wry sense of humor to keep them interested.
Matt will be sorely missed by all of his scouting cohorts on the Rocky Mountain Council, on which I am proud to have served on for the last several years. He served as president of the council a couple years ago.
My sincere condolences go out to Diane, Michael and Brian, as well as the rest of his family.
Why a gentleman, father, husband and friend to many has to be gone so early in his life is hard to understand. Thanks for all you gave Matt. I’ll never forget you and neither will all of scouts whose lives you changed forever. You took the scout oath to heart!

  36. Matt was a wonderful person, a great cardiologist and a real friend. I enjoyed referring patients to him because they were all treated so well and he was so caring and nice to them. He was so well thought of by so many that he is sure to be missed. His demise is a great loss to our community. Though I didn’t know his family well, I offer them my condolences.
I am saddened that I cannot attend his funeral services for on that same day, I am attending a family funeral in Detroit.
    Carl Bartecchi, MD

  37. Dear Diane, I am Jessica Luthers mom. She loves you, and your family. I am so deeply sorry to hear about the loss of your dear husband. Please know we are thinking about you and would like will send a donation to the Boy Scouts of America. Jessica’s cousin is one of the highest ranking scouts. Take good care.

  39. So sorry for your loss Diane,Brian, Michael. I enjoyed spending time talking with Matt when I was helping with His father Bill. Youwill be in my thoughts and prayers.

  40. Dr. Sumpter was a wonderful Cardiologist, and not only did I work with him at St. Mary Corwin, he was also my husbands cardiologist. My husband is originally from Pueblo, so they would visit about old times during his appointments. He will be missed terribly and our prayers are with your family at this difficult time.

  45. To Linda and the whole Matthew Sumpter family: I’m sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of the Sumpter family from many years ago. God bless you all in this sad time.

  46. I worked with Dr Sumpter at Parkview many years ! He was a wonderful person. Kind, considerate, and friendly to all. When my Mom needed heart surgery, I requested he do it! What a terrible loss to your family as well as to the Pueblo community!

  47. Dear Diane, Michael, Brian, and the rest of the Sumpter family:
Please accept my condolences on the loss of Matt.. He will be sorely missed. After having worked with him as one of my partners at Pueblo Cardiology Associates, I feel enormously blessed to have been associated with him all these years. He was a compassionate man who always made everyone feel as if they had his undivided attention. He had a wonderful sense of humor which was uplifting to all when the daily workload seemed overwhelming. Matt had great organizational skills and was able to bring people together in our group who often had differing opinions. As a Pueblo native he took great pride in this community and wanted to see it prosper. He was very proud of his family and was a wonderful father and husband. His patients were treated with respect and admired him. I can only hope that his life will serve as a reminder of what we as humans can aspire to be. You will be missed Matt but will never be forgotten. We all expected you to be in our presence for a few more years, and I regret not telling you earlier how much I appreciated your efforts and hard work.

  48. To Diane, Brian, Michael and Pueblo Cardiology Family. I had the Honor and Pleasure of working with Dr. Sumpter what a kind and caring man who always had a Open Door policy. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

  49. Heaven rejoiced while the earth wept upon the passing of Dr. Matt Sumpter. Throughout my life, I have been blessed to know many outstanding physicians, but Dr. Matt rewrote the book on maintaining a beautiful balance between professionalism and exceptional, highly personal and competent care for his patients. As a cardiologist, he was truly “second to none.”Matt, as I called him, was not only my doctor, he was my friend. He made time to meet me for coffee and was sincerely interested in me as a person; he cared about the joys and sorrows in my life, and early on shared with me his personal cell phone number, and encouraged me to use it anytime, day or night, should the need arise. I knew him to be a devoted husband and father, as he shared with me many accolades and praises about his wonderful wife and his awesome boys. Matt was kind, he was considerate and most of all he was genuine He also had an infectious sense of humor. His passion for “life” was truly contagious. I will miss him beyond what mere words could adequately express. Those of us who knew him are fortunate indeed. I recently was the real estate sale’s agent for the buyers’ who purchased a home that belonged to Matt’s late parents. Just last week I texted him, letting him now how very much the new owners “are loving the home.” His response to that text was “just makes me smile.” Well Matt brought thousands of smiles to multitudes of people! I extend my heartfelt condolences to Diane, Brian, Michael and the extended Sumpter family.

  50. So very sorry for your loss. Dr. Sumpter was recommended to me by Dr. Eric Roehm of Austin, Texas 11 years ago. He liked the fact that I did not smoke, was not over weight, walked daily and exercised at least 3 times a week. Our once a year visits were a quick check up and catch up as to what we had done during the past year. I’ll miss him.
