Resided in: Pueblo, CO

Catherine L. 'Cay' Hopkins, 79, passed away April 19, 2004, in Pueblo, Colorado. Catherine was a wife, mother and the last of the great American volunteers. Cay was born February 10, 1925, in Denver, Colorado to the late Harry and Carrie Howland. At an early age she learned the joy of giving of oneself and the responsibilities of being a leader. In December of 1946, Cay was joined for life with her life partner, William G. Hopkins. Catherine truly enjoyed her role as a wife and strived for 58 years to be a partner who supported and completed the circle of love that binds two people into a couple. In 1951, Cay began a second, and in the opinion of her children, greater role as mother. Cay's mothering nature not only included her three children, but a wide age range of children who knew her as 'Grandma Cay.' Cay and William served as missionaries in Central America. No job was too small for Cay. She was always available with a smile and a hug when needed. Cay was a true believer in Pueblo. Her contributions to such organizations as the YMCA, Pueblo Symphony, Rosemount Museum, and the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, illustrates her love of her city and her conviction that a life should be exposed to and enhanced spiritually, culturally and physically. Cay was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she gave generously of her time and talents. It was her belief that all matters could be solved by having a personal relationship with God. Cay is survived by her husband, William G. Hopkins; daughters, Gayle (Steve Lamy) Hopkins, Los Angeles, Calif., Sharon White, Chester, South Carolina; son, Greg (Cindy) Hopkins, Denver; three grandchildren, Rachel White, Connor and Brenna Hopkins and two grand dogs. Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2004, at First United Methodist Church, 11th & Court., with the Reverend Dr. Rick Calhoun officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that families come together for a night of togetherness and conversation. Memorials may be made to the YMCA or the First United Methodist Church, c/o the funeral home. Online condolences, www.montgomerysteward.com

  1. Dear Hoppy, Gayle, Sharon, Greg, and extended family,
I was so very sad to hear of Cay’s death. Cay was such a presence in my life as I was growing up in First UMC. When I worked for Hoppy I looked forward to her visits to the office. She had the ability to make anyone feel good about themselves and want to live up to her standards of giving. I think my two favorite memories of her were her chairing the Centennial/Bicenntenial for the state Colorado and having fondue for the first time in your home with our youth group when she and Hoppy were our sponsors. She will be greatly missed. Since I have been out of contact for so many years I am not aware of the circumstances of her death but I know that each of you rest in the sure and certain hope that all pain and suffering and even death itself has passed and when we meet her again in glory we shall all be made new.
With much love, Mary Margaret Rose

  2. Hoppy and family,

    Our sincerest condolences.

  3. Dear Dr. Hopkins, Gayle, Sharon and Greg,

I will always remember the kindness and generosity that your family extended to my family over a number of years, so my thoughts are with you now. I remember Cay not only for her good and noble qualities that others have mentioned, but also for her sense of humor and approachable, down to earth nature. I can only imagine that Cay will be personally missed by hundreds of people of all ages.

  6. Dear Hoppy & Family,
You and Cay coming to Pleasant Grove Church and spending other time with you when you came to be with Sharon and Pat is a great, sustaining memory for Jenny and me. You and your family ministered to ours when we were raising 4 small children. Cay was a wonderful, Christian lady who is now experiencing what “eye has not seen nor ear has heard”–the fullness of the Lord. Her love and legacy live with us as well as our appreciation for you. We thank the Lord for sharing both of you with us.
You, Sharon, and your family are in our prayers in weeks to come.

    Love to you all,
    Buddy, Jenny, & Family

  7. Hoppy,
We want to extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Cay was a great lady and will be greatly missed. May God and friends be with you in your sorrow.
You are in our prayers. Frank worked with Cay at Rosemount Museum and had a great respect for her. I will miss her at the Club. Let me know if you ever need a ride to the Club.

  8. My deepest sympathies to your family. In knowing her son Greg, I can attest that Catherine did a fabulous job as a parent and role model. My prayers are with you all.
    Love,
    Charlotte

  9. I have been blessed to have had my path cross those of Cay and Bill. My day was always brighter after sharing a meal and/or visiting them on behalf of the College. My heart and prayers are yours Bill and to your family.

Cay and her passion for humanity will be deeply missed. Our comfort is knowing she is in a much better place.

    With Deepest regards,

  10. Dear Hoppy,

We were so sad to hear about Cay’s passing. We remember visiting with both of you at Applebees just a few weeks ago. It was always a pleasure to see you.

We admired her greatly. You were the ‘dynamic duo’ and she will be missed by many.

God bless you during this difficult time. We will pray for you and your family.

    God Bless,
    CW and Jan Smith

  11. “Hoppy”, I am so sorry about your loss. Cay was a delightful lady and I did so enjoy working with her and getting to know her when I did the liquidation of your household there on Argyle. What a loss to the community as well as your family. I send my love and best wishes in her memory.
