Celebration of Life:

Steve Ellis Slatter, 67, beloved husband, father, Grandfather and friend, passed away on Jan. 1, 2026, in Pueblo, Colorado. Born on May 23, 1958, in Grand Haven, Michigan, Steve led a life defined by dedication to his craft and deep love for his family.

From November 1978 to November 1982, Steve served in the United States Navy as a chef aboard the USS Snook. His military service laid the groundwork for a distinguished career in the culinary arts. After his time in the Navy, he worked as an executive chef at various hotels and resorts before spending over 25 years as General Manager at Golden Corral. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impression on colleagues and guests alike.

Steve’s passion for cooking extended beyond his profession, it was how he connected with others. Whether preparing meals for large gatherings or intimate family dinners, he found joy in bringing people together around the table.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Slatter (Married for 41 years); daughter, Jennifer (Charles) Godbold; sons, Steven Slatter and Dane Slatter; grandchildren, Alexis (John) Garcia, Daniel Gavin, and Riley Godbold; and great-grandson, Jayce Garcia. He also leaves behind his brothers, Chris (Joy) Parcheta and Randy (Shelia) Slatter; and sister, Valerie (Marc) Blondin.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and other beloved family members.

He enjoyed traveling, especially to Estes Park—and had a deep appreciation for wildlife and sports. Time spent with his pets and grandchildren brought him great happiness.

Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, in the Montgomery & Steward Funeral Chapel.

  1. Steve and I were good friends in junior high and high school. Many times I have tried to locate him but never found him.
I am sad that we could never connect again just to say hello and reminisce.

  2. Sue, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve lost Steve. I worked next to him at the Riverwatch from opening til summer of ‘86. I met you in 89-90 in Atlanta when I was attending Toccoa Falls Bible College with Janet Ritchie. I learned a great deal from Steve. He was a good boss and a great man. You and the kids are in our prayers.

  3. Hi Sue and family
There’s not a month that goes by I don’t think of Steve. From my first meeting at Riverwatch in GH and working for him there and for hiring me into Marriott. Steve was a fantastic guy to work with and for, my experience with him enriched my career in kitchen life.
Several years ago I missed you by a couple of weeks as I stopped by Golden Coral in Rapid City on my trip out west.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time.

  4. CandleImageI will really miss you Steve. It’s so unusual to think of a Brother in law as a brother but I did. You were there for me in 2012 after my brush with death and I’ll never forget that. I missed the type of cooking I got used to when the family moved in with me in GA. as your house was built. The cooking was amazing. I grieve for your family and will always remember you my brother.

I learned a lot from him on how to care for my team when I became a manager. He was always welcoming of his employees and the customer always enjoyed seeing him. Him and his wife were a great asset to Rapid City. Rest in Paradise. You will be missed.
