Mitchell Don Stutters, born, May 18, 1959 in Monte Vista Colorado and passed away April 7, 2026 in Pueblo.
Mitch loved dogs, fishing, family, friends, poker, the Broncos, the Denver Nuggets, playing
horse shoes, the blues, the color blue. M&M’s, turkeys and other birds, and especially the
mountains. He was born in Monte Vista, Colorado to his proud parents Donald and Sandra
Stutters. It is fitting that he was born in a town with mountain vistas. He grew up camping,
skiing, fishing, visiting family in Oklahoma, and playing sports. He proudly played football for
the South High School Colts and was in the class of 1977. Upon graduation he joined the Marine
Corps. After his military service he worked at a wide variety of jobs, including but not limited to,
trucker, roofer, and pizza-maker. He earned an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology and
was truly gifted at working with animals. He was known by the people at the dog park and other
friends as “The Animal Whisperer”.
His closest friends were Barbara and Robert Adcock and he treasured his time with them.
Together they had ten years of camping and fishing adventures. Mitch was obsessed with fishing
but he couldn’t tie a knot. He had a saying, “If you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot.” He had recently
tried belly boat fishing and he thought that was the best thing in the world. His favorite places to
fish were Ophir Creek, Taylor Reservoir, and Lake Isabelle. (His secret fishing holes are still
hidden.)
One of the best moments of his life included seeing a bear in a lightning storm and he had a
tattoo to commemorate it. He told his sister while in the hospital that he had lived a good life and
shared an astonishing experience of fishing at a lake. He was looking for moose across the lake
when his friend when his friend Robert pointed out that there was one right next to him.
He often hiked with his favorite companion and lifelong friend, his dog Yogi. He was always
happiest outside enjoying mother nature. The last outdoor excursion he took was to drive his
mom over to the Goodnight Barn in Pueblo to see the wild turkeys.
Mitch loved comedy especially George Carlin, whom he saw live, Steven Wright, Johnny
Carson, Monty Python, SNL and the family favorite The Marx Brothers. Mitch had a quick wit
and could be very funny.
He loved to learn about geology and history. One of his favorite hangouts was the Lamb Branch
of the Pueblo Library. He was an admirer of John Steinbeck and especially his novel “Tortilla
Flats.” Mitch knew a great deal about a variety of things. He could always surprise you with a
fact about turkeys or culturally modified trees, or an endless number of things.
After several months of struggle, Mitch died peacefully with his mother at his side. For the last
ten years he took care of his parents, and often would stay the night to be there for them. He was
a dutiful son and loved his family deeply.
He is preceded in death by his father Donald Stutters and his dogs Spot, Schultz (named after
Sargent Shultz from Hogan’s Heroes), Yogi, and Biscuit. He is survived by his mother Sandra
Welch Stutters, sister April Stutters, and friends Robert and Barbara Adcock.
Sandy and April want to especially thank Ann Oshiro, and Todd and Kelly Albrecht for their
support and care of Mitch and for our family.
There will not be a service, but if you would like to dedicate your next cup of coffee to him, he
would love that. If you don’t drink coffee, pick up a pack of M&Ms and think of him.
If you would like to make a donation in his name please donate to the Sangre de Cristo
Community Care Hospice at https://www.sangre.org or to the Colorado Fish and
