Katherine M. (Shouse) Zerfas, 92, affectionately known as “Sugar,” passed away at her home in Pueblo on February 16, 2026. She was life long Pueblo resident. Sugar is survived by her children, Kathi Hamby and Ralph Zerfas (You Feng); Cleo Day, Carolyn (Gary) Gray, and Betty Zerfas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ralph R Zerfas, Sr.; Frank Zerfas, Carrie Zerfas, Roy Shouse, Katherine  Shouse, Winifred Shouse, Ella Grigsby, Helene Henry, and George Henry.

Sugar was born March 25, 1933 in Pueblo. She graduated from Central High in 1951. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from University of Northern Colorado. Sugar didn’t want the Master’s but Ralph Sr. insisted. She taught English at South High for 20 years until her retirement in 1989.

Sugar enjoyed reading, the Colorado Symphony, and weekends at the Kozy Korner or Coors. She loved her dogs: Dieter, Dusty, Camille, Genza Blooma, Bunny, Webster, and Isadora and always wondered how she ended up with kids who were cat people. But she realized her kids weren’t perfect. 😉

Graveside service, 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Imperial Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to PAWS for Life, 800 N. Pueblo Blvd., Pueblo, CO 81003.
