Vigil Service:

Rev. Joyce William “Bill” Huber (Father Bill)

Father Bill was born on October 19, 1933, to Michael and Gertrude Huber in Palisade, Colorado, the fifth son of seven children. His older sister, Elizabeth, was their first-born, but she tragically died in infancy. The family was completed with the birth of a sixth son, five years after Father Bill’s birth.

Father Bill, always an avid learner and a good student, graduated from Palisade Public School in 1951. That fall, he entered St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, where he completed his studies and was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood for the Diocese of Pueblo on June 6, 1959. His first assignment was as Assistant Pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Alamosa, CO.

In 1962, he was assigned to St. Patrick’s Church in Pueblo, where he served until 1967, when he became Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in La Junta, CO. In 1970, Father Bill was assigned as co-Pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Pueblo.

Taking a leave of absence from the Diocese in August 1971, Father Bill began his studies in Psychology at the University of Detroit. While completing his Master’s degree there, he initiated plans to pursue a Doctorate at the California School of Professional Psychology, recognizing society’s growing need for marriage and family counseling. He earned his Ph.D. there in August 1976 and received his license as a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor in California.

In the next chapter of his life, Father Bill moved to Massachusetts to work as a psychologist at the House of Affirmation International Therapeutic Center for Clergy and Religious. After several years, he transferred to the House of Affirmation in Webster Groves, Missouri, where he served first as Assistant Regional Director and then as Director.

In 1988, Father Bill studied at the North American College Institute for Continuing Theological Education in Rome, before returning to Pueblo to serve as the Diocesan Director of Priestly/Religious Well-Being.

In 1995, Father Bill was appointed Pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Pueblo and St. Paul the Apostle Mission in Pueblo West. He served as Pastor of St. Pius X until his retirement on July 1, 2010. His older brother, Msgr. Daniel Huber, moved in with him, and the two brothers lived together, eventually moving to St. Elizabeth’s Gardens in Denver in 2014.

Father Bill had a strong drive for achievement, occasionally enjoying travel and visiting family and friends. He appreciated the arts and enjoyed a good meal. He was deeply appreciated by many for his gifted spiritual direction. Though he endured chronic physical health problems, he lived a robust life until his final years, when his health began to deteriorate.

A Vesper service will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

  1. CandleImageFather Huber was a resident of mine at Pueblo Villa . I enjoyed our talks he became my friend. I’ve been thinking about him lately.I couldn’t sleep tonight and for some reason at 1:40am I decided to google his name and sadly came across his obituary. My condolences to his family and friends.

  2. Thank you all for sharing your beautiful messages on how much my dear Uncle Bill gave so much life to others through his service to God & our church. May he rest in peace with all the souls he touched throughout his ministry here on earth. Uncle Bill, please give Uncle Dan & all our other family big hugs for me please! Love you! 🩵 🙏

  3. CandleImageOur deepest condolences to Fr. Bill’s family. He married my husband and I in 1996, and baptized both of our children at St.Pius. We always enjoyed our conversations with him, as he was also our neighbor for several years. He was a great man and will be missed.

  4. Fr.Bill and I became friends through my long time friend, Bishop Tafoya. Headed to a pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain. The night before we left 2 priests from Pueblo had been murdered so bishop could not come. It was so difficult for Fr. Bill and the parishioners. Fr. Bill showed great leadership and sensitivity while leading everyone through the beginning of grief work, including prayers, mass and sharing memories. The trip was wonderful, filled with blessing, hope and gratefulness for the unintended leader, FR.BILL

  5. CandleImageFather Huber performed my marriage rite in 1966 at St Patricks. Father was so nice and gracious. Rest in Peace dear Father Huber. Condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

  6. CandleImageDeepest sympathy to the family of Father Bill. He was one of the best priests I ever had. When I attended St. Pius, I looked forward to his homilies. I told him once that he should print them in the bulletin so we would have them to read over and over. Rest in peace, Father.

  7. CandleImageFr. Bill , you will always be in our hearts and prayers . Thank you for always being there for us on Michelle’s Thanksgiving mass for 19 years. She is a miracle baby !

  10. CandleImageMay God bless him and let perpetual light shine on him! May the light he helped nurture through his whole life and ministry shine on forever!

  11. CandleImageFr. Bill was my childhood priest and continued to be my priest all the way up to me being 33 years old. Me and Fr. Bill had each other’s backs we where ride or die Partners lol. Father Bill was a inspiration to me. That made me continue to stay strong. In my Catholic faith, he was so good that I would play Priest. When I was a little girl in my room. He also gave me my first communion and first reconciliation As I got older we drifted away but we came back again The last couple years I had the honor of assisting him with mass at the Age of 33 And even all the day back to when I was a little girl. I always protected father bill and if anyone disrespected him And at times it got me in trouble. I would fight for him as he fought for me when there were anti Milagros people I will never forgot when I had to break the news to father bill , I won’t be able to help him on Sunday due to having to ride the bus I told him I was worried about what People would think about me riding the bus His Comment was while if jesus was here in today’s world he would have walk and rode the bus he then says god has gave you a gift to walk in his sons footsteps and you will be hurt and jesus to was hurt by his people he said Cherish this journey with your whole heart. He says look how much you have grown to have a journey like this. RIP Fr.Bill I will make you proud.😊😢❤️🙏🏾you will protect me as being my angel now.
