Edward Ralph Mastro, Jr., M.D.
May 28, 1932 – February 11, 2026

Edward Ralph Mastro, Jr., 93, of Pueblo, Colorado, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026.
Born on May 28, 1932, in Pueblo, to Edward and Louise (Adamich) Mastro, Ed grew up in the Bessemer neighborhood and was a proud graduate of Pueblo Central High School. He attended Creighton University, and Creighton University School of Medicine. He later completed postgraduate studies at Harvard University.
Dr. Mastro served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army, spending two years stationed in Verdun, France. Following his military service, he returned to Pueblo where he dedicated nearly four decades (1964-2002) to the practice of general and trauma surgery. Over the course of his career, he performed thousands of surgeries, caring for generations of families and responding to countless emergency cases with skill and steady resolve. He served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at St. Mary Corwin Hospital, later serving on the hospital’s Board of Directors.
Ed was a longtime parishioner, and usher at Christ the King Catholic Church, and gave generously of his time assisting with Meals on Wheels and medical service projects. He believed deeply in service – to his patients, his church and his community.
Outside of medicine, Ed found joy in golf, running and bicycling. He cherished family time and rarely missed a chance to cheer on his children and grandchildren at their games, performances, and activities. His pride in his family was unmistakable.
He is survived by his children: Mary McAtee, Anne (John) Dooley, and Michael (Laura) Mastro; and grandchildren: Kevin, Colin, and Katherine McAtee; Kathleen Dooley (fiancé Jeff Florey), Bridget (Atticus) Shaskan, and Joseph Dooley; Eddie, Aunna (fiancé D.J. Hurd) and Evan Mastro; as well as great- grandson, Arthur Shaskan. He is also survived by his sisters-in law, Kathy (John) Meehan and Jan Gentleman, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Sue Mastro; son-in-law, Mark McAtee; grandson, Alex Mastro; and brothers-in-law, Robert and Tom Gentleman.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Christ the King Catholic Church,
1708 Horseshoe Drive in Pueblo. A private internment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, St. Mary Corwin Hospital Foundation, or the Pueblo Community Soup Kitchen.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Parkview Rehabilitation Center, St. Mary Corwin Hospital, and Lucille Osteen for her loving and devoted care at home.
Dr. Mastro’s legacy lives on in the lives he saved, the family and friends he cherished, and the community he faithfully served. Online condolences, www.MontgomerySteward.com

  1. Our mother Ann Koncilja who was night supervisor at St. Mary Corwin Hospital had a very high opinion of Dr. Edward Mastro so back in 1973 while using a tablesaw in shop class at Central high school I cut my left thumb and Dr. Mastro in his office performed an elaborate skin graft and expertly repaired the damage. Later in 1975 I worked with him in the operating room as a surgical technician and we formed a friendship. Having someone of his caliber as a role model was very important to me and his example as a Pueblo native becoming a renowned surgeon had a huge impact on my life. He was always a very kind and compassionate and sometimes humorous surgeon who had a terrific bedside manner! He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

  2. CandleImageIn 1969 I was rushed to the hospital for a ruptured appendix and developed Peritonitis. Dr. Mastro was the surgeon on duty.
He successfully removed my appendix and was able to save my life. I will always be thankful to him for doing that.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  3. My condolences to the Mastro family. Dr. Mastro saved my husband’s life back in the 70’s performing surgery late one night after I called him at home because my husband had delivered the newspapers to his family’s home as a young boy & knew the family. Many years later Doctors at the University hospital in Denver marveled the fact my husband survived the triple A surgery. Dr. Mastro gave me 66 years with my husband. He died one day before Doctor. Rest in peace!

  4. CandleImageSo sorry to hear of Dr. Mastro’s passing. I work with him for many years in the operating room at St. Mary Corwin and I have many wonderful memories of him. He was a good man and excellent surgeon.

  5. CandleImageI worked 61/2 years with Dr Mastro. He was the best! He enabled me to back to get my BSN. Such a generous person. He was a great surgeon and so good to his patients and staff. My husband Ray and I had a nice friendship with him and Sue. Condolences to the family. RIP

  6. CandleImageDr. Mastro, saved my mom’s life several times by his outstanding surgery abilities. Rest in Peace, you deserve it. Prayers to your family for such a great loss. Bless all.
