William Jerome Omlid

He looks like a frail old man huddled in a big recliner, but look more closely and see electric blue eyes watching all around and you get a glimpse of a man who has lived a good life.
You see the boy who was born and raised on a North Dakota farm –A life he never lost his love for. He was baptized, confirmed and always attended Sunday School at Walle Lutheran church.
At 20 (1968) he married Suzann Barr at Walle and they had two sons. His son Micah died in 2007, which was devastating for Bill, but he continued a close relationship with Cameron. He was thrilled when Cam married Michelle and he became very dependent on their assistance with the “heavy lifting” of home life.
You can see the young man who spent 18 months in Vietnam and who was awarded a Bronze Star.
You see a man who worked with juvenile delinquents for twenty years. His firmness and fairness earned the respect of kids, families, and fellow staff. He retired from the Division of Youth Corrections in 2007.
You can see a big, bad biker dude who loved to go to Sturgis annually and reconnect with others to have a big barbeque at the motel in Belle Fouche. He always brought the corn!!
Was this a saint? Absolutely not – but he was a good, caring person who leaves the many lives he touched with wonderful memories.

Biker Bill, you and Suz were amazing neighbors. We loved all of the “middle of the street” conversations we had with you. Even after we moved across the park you always made sure to deliver Widman’s “Chocolate Chippers” (chocolate-covered wavy potato chips) to Rubi, Catherine, and Alister. Last Halloween when we came trick-or-treating for the last time, your eyes sparkled when you answered the door and you told us to wait while you went to get one last box of them from your freezer to give us. Thanks for loving our kids and enjoying watching them grow. We missed you when we moved out of the neighborhood and we will miss your presence on this earth, friend. Love you.
Donald F Carey ” Big Donnie ” ,
He always was down for a good time riding and having laughs with freinds
Bill never went anywhere where he didn’t make a friend.
He was giving and generous at every benefit, kind but strong and always with a smile, R.I.P. Brother

Bill was a friend from our childhood and teen years in Grand Forks. Both of our families were farmers a few miles apart. Bill was always a fun person to be around. I have many fond memories of those times. In later years we would cross paths in Colorado. Last time I saw Bill was in 2008 at my father’s funeral in Boulder. Bill came in his Dad’s big red Cadillac. It fit him. We were also both Vietnam veterans.
My condolences to Bill’s family. Rest in peace, Bill.
I grew up with Cameron and Micah, and spent many an afternoon and summer day hanging out at their home. Bill was always quick with a joke, and was a favorite amongst the neighborhood boys…we always held him in a state of awe and respect (having a great beard and riding a Harley added to the effect, of course).
One of my favorite memories of Bill, though, was many years later, when I encountered him by chance on a neighborhood walk one morning, as my toddler daughter and I were happily walking down a sidewalk near their home. This bear of a man let out a huge laugh and said “she’s really going places, huh?” and she looked up at him and started beaming and giggling. I reminded Bill who I was (it had been almost 15 years since we’d seen each other), and we had a great conversation…we just picked up where we’d left off.
Bill was a great man. He leaves behind a legacy of many lives he touched, and he will be missed. My thoughts are with you both, Cameron and Suzann.
What do you say about a guy who drives 2000 miles one way to attend a surprise party? A true friend, fellow biker and Rene’s fellow Vietnam veteran. The memory of seeing him at our 50th Anniversary party warms our hearts; never to be forgotten. Til we meet again Wild Bill. 🩵
Yes, Wild Bill always brought the corn to our BBQ at the AmericInn Belle Fourche! His toy hauler, cars and bike were always noticed in the parking lot. Bill was a friend to many here in Belle and we will miss him dearly. His delivery of chocolate potato chips was always well received! So many great memories will be carried in our hearts and minds and we are honored to have known Bill and to call him friend. Much love to Suze and Cam.
God bless the family. May all the memories be a help to carry you through the hard times. Bob and Barb Fladeland
I first met Bill while we attended Southern Colorado State College (USC-Pueblo) from 1973 to 1975. We were both veterans and were members of the SCSC Veterans Club and Bill was a very active member. He was fun member of the Club. He took his turn as President of the Club and he encouraged membership for community actives, such as sponsoring summer youth activites. We continued our friendship and everyday after classes he and many members came over to our apartment to talk and have a few beers. Looking back I believe we counseled ourselvers from our experiences during the military. Bill was a nautural counselor and a great friend to everyone he met. As we graduated employment took us all in separate many directions. I went on to Graduate school at the University of Nebraska and was employed by the Veterans Administration. We always stayed in contact with Bill and Suzie over the years. After retirement we moved back to Pueblo. We continued our friendship with Bill and Suzie and with Ron and Kathy DeHerrea. Bill was always a positive, caring person throughout his lifetime. It became difficult to communicate with him as his hearing was not good, however he was attentive to others he met. I remember Bill as an outstanding friend and I know he cheered up others he met on a daily basis. Bill will be missed by all. I feel I was fortunate to have met Bill and Suzie and friendship we had over the 50 years we known each other. He touched many lives and I am positiive he helped the youth he counseled. Bill wlll be missed and I send my love to Suzie, Cam and his family at this time,
