  1. My favorite photo of Aunt Suzi was taken when she was about six months old. The black-and-white picture shows a round-headed, bald baby wearing an ear-to-ear grin. Her little face is covered with spinach, and it radiates joy. Subsequent childhood photos show her with my mother, her elder sister. In these, my mom always looks at the camera as though she’s about to take a calculus exam. Suzi, on the other hand, wears a shit-stirring grin, as though she has just done something naughty and gotten away with it.
My aunt Suzi never lost that ability to find humor and joy and, yes, to stir the shit. Throughout her life, she maintained a wicked sense of humor and mischief.
Not to mention the rare talent of being able to formulate a wicked comeback within seconds.
This is my favorite Aunt Suzi story:
For a long time, Suzi worked in customer service for Mountain Bell, the long-defunct phone company. One day, a man called, furious because his new phone didn’t work. Suzi tried to placate him, but he just got more angry. Finally, he yelled, “I’m going to come down there and shove this phone right up your ass!”
Without skipping a beat, Suzi said, “Well, I sure hope it’s a streamline model.”
I can’t believe I will never laugh and be silly with her again. Never hug her again. Her passing leaves such a giant, black hole in the middle of my life. I hope I can cope with the loss the way she always did–with humor and a zen-like calm–but I’m not sure I can. I miss her so much.

  2. I never met Susie, but I knew her through Donna. How close they were to one another traveling and exchanging their prodigious collection of books. My condolences to the whole family for their loss..
