Geraldine (Grassmick) Elson Obituary
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Geraldine (Grassmick) Elson, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on August 30, 2023, at the age of 86.
Geraldine “Geri” was born on September 19, 1936, in Sugar City, CO to August and Eva Grassmick; she was the fourth-born daughter of five.
At the age of 16, Geri eloped with her beloved, James Elson, in Raton, NM on May 16, 1953. Settling in Pueblo, CO, they shared 61 years of marriage together before his passing in 2014.
Geri was the loving and devoted mother of James Elson Jr (Valerie), Gary Elson (Connie), and Jeannine Bartmess (Ken); proud grandmother of James Elson III (Kaila), Aaron Elson (Pam), Eric Elson (Amy), Charlene Van Ooyen (Zak), Nicole Melster (Matt), Kayla Zamora (Jonathan), and Nathan Elson (Ashleigh); special great-grandmother of thirteen; and godmother to Kimberly Moore (deceased) and Heather Burner (Codey). Geri was predeceased by her beloved and devoted husband, Jim; her parents, August and Eva Grassmick; her sisters, Joyce, Betty, Dorothy, and Kathy; and her niece/goddaughter, Kimberly.
Geri lived a full life as a wonderful mother and homemaker. In addition, she was employed outside the home at Riverside Printing, State Farm Insurance, and Walmart.
Geri enjoyed Sunday dinners and holidays with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was highly skilled with knitting needles and crochet hooks making afghans, sweaters, potholders, dishcloths, and scrubbers galore! Geri was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and NASCAR racing. Camping, Cripple Creek, and Las Vegas were some of her favorite destination outings in her younger years. Lifelong friendships were formed because of Geri’s participation in the Carlile Elementary PTA as well as her Bunco Club. In addition, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Pueblo, CO.
Most of all, she loved her family and instilled in her children, strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held at the Montgomery & Steward Funeral Home Chapel, 1317 N Main St, Pueblo, CO on Friday, October 6, 2023, beginning at 10:30 AM. Online condolences, www.MontgomerySteward.com
Gerri was my best friend in High school at Sugar City and she was my Bridesmaid at my wedding, I didn’t keep in contact very well, but I always thought of her and Jim. And I’m sorry she will be so missed by the people whose lives she touched. I have sweet memories of our happy times together. Love and prayers to the family, Jacque Wolfe

When we lived in Geri and Jim’s rental, what a grand time we had. Playing cards, going to movies, laughing so hard that the tears would roll down our cheeks. The kids would come in the kitchen ……say what’s so funny? We didn’t have our baby’s but little Nini would crawl up on mommy’s lap and fall asleep even with all our noise. What wonderful memories! My dear sweet angel , we shall meet again! I love you and your wonderful family!✝️❤️

I wrote this once but think I forgot to save it so if I repeat myself I apologize. Geri has been in my life or at least my memory all of my life. Jimmy was my dad’s cousin. Jimmy grew up in Sugar City, he and my brother Sonny we childhood friends. My dad took Jimmy and Geri under his wings and considered both of them his children. Geri was always a happy person. It seems our lives were intertwined with visits and card playing with my parents. I will always remember my last telephone conversation with Geri about a year ago. She answered the phone with the same sweet, cheerful voice I had remembered. I told her she sounded 18 years old. She responded with her signature giggle. Rest in Peace, my friend. ❤️
