Service for Dennis Garn:

Dennis Theodore Garn, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2022, at the Joni Fair Hospice House in Pueblo, Colo. Dennis was born in Akron, Ohio to Theodore and Beryl Garn on Aug. 24, 1936.  He married Gail Woodcock on Aug. 17, 1956, and together they had four children: Deborah and Barbara in 1957, Richard in 1960 and Steven in 1963.  Dennis graduated from the University of Akron with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Indiana University.  He served four years as a Captain in the U.S. Army in the Chemical Corps.

Dennis embarked on a long career as an Engineer for B.F. Goodrich which took him and his family across the U.S. from Ohio, Maryland, Alabama, Indiana, California and Guadalajara, Mexico. Ultimately, it landed him and Gail in Pueblo where they lived for the past 35 years. They were active members of the community, supporters of the local arts, the Pueblo Zoo, longtime members of First United Methodist Church and he volunteered and drove for Meals on Wheels. Dennis was a long-serving member of the Masonic Lodge, including past Grand Master and member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.  He enjoyed shooting pool, playing golf and playing cards.  He and Gail traveled extensively around the world including places such as China, Egypt, Spain, UK, Jordan, Russia and Greece.

Dennis is survived by his children, Deborah (David), Richard (Nile) and Steven (Vickie); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Pat; and brother, Gordon.  Preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gail (2020); and daughter, Barbara (1976)

  1. Denny was my brother-in-law for a very long time. He started me on my way with sloe gin fizzes before I went out to peddle my papers. There was a steady increase in variety of drinks and foods and so forth that followed. We had some big fun. There were too many wonderful and memorable times to recount.. He was the Boy Scout motto personified— you know, loyal, helpful, friendly, kind reverent, etc, etc, etc. I am going to miss him very much.

  2. Dennis always had a joke to tell at Meals on Wheels and also a piece of candy to hand out most of the time. Such a gentleman and a gentle soul.

  3. I did not get to meet Dennis and Gail in person until 2013 or 2014, when they visited Wellington, New Zealand on a cruise. We had been introduced electronically by a mutual friend from FUMC. They subsequently hosted 2 dinner parties (2014, 2015) to enable us to get together with old friends from FUMC. That’s just an example of how kind and generous Dennis was. I knew him only briefly, but he left a profound impression on me. RIP, and fond memories.

  4. Dennis was a great friend and a wonderful person – like a brother to me. We have been all around the world with him and Gail – China, Thailand, Europe. He was a wonderful cook and wonderful host in our Gourmet Dinner Group. I have so many stories that I would love to share at the memorial service. Unfortunately, we will not be able to make it at this time.
I would do anything with him except ride with him driving. He drove just like he lived – pedal to the metal. He had a remarkable store of energy and inner strength.
That strength was tested when Gail’s illness weakened her. And still he persevered, seeing her cheerfully through all the tough times. Most of us would not have fared as well as he did.
His beautiful soul will be sorely missed!
Eternal rest, grant unto him, O LORD, And let perpetual light shine upon him!

  5. Dennis had a heart of gold. His worldview was evidence of his diverse travels and interests. His passing leaves a void in so many lives. His talents graced the lives of so many and his lemon meringue pie are part of his legacy.
