Rev. Curtis M. Butler, accomplished pastor, missionary, and college president, passed into the presence of the Lord Jesus peacefully at home on November 28, 2017. Ruth, his loving wife and companion of 56 years was with him. He was the proud father of three sons, Steve, Kevin (Kim), and Craig (DeVella), grandfather of nine (Ella, Chloe, Ian, Chris, Haylee, Luke, Addison, Kennedy, and Delaney), great-grandfather of one (Maeve). Born in Hull, AL on May 3, 1933, Curtis served in the air force during the Korean War before being ordained as an Assemblies of God minister. He pastored in MI and NC for 12 years, most notably building the First Assembly of God in Goldsboro, NC as a pioneer pastor. In 1973, Curtis accepted an appointment as a foreign missionary to serve in the Philippines where, together with Ruth and his three sons, worked among the tribal people of Northern Luzon evangelizing, planting churches, and serving both the Ilocano and Tagalog speaking regions teaching at Luzon Bible Institute and Bethel Bible College (BBC). Curtis developed the BBC extension in Quezon City and eventually served as BBC president from 1995-1998. Soon after, Curtis and his wife, Ruth, were asked to serve in Israel at Galilee Bible College. Former Assemblies of God General Superintendent, George Wood, praised Curtis saying, 'You have had a long, fruitful, trustworthy, and enviable period of service to the General Council of the Assemblies of God and to the Kingdom of God. I congratulate you!' Curtis is preceded in death by his father and mother (Fred & Opal Butler), two brothers (Clarence & Willard) and sister (Juanita). His surviving sister (Wreathel (Robert) Canady). Viewing, from 5 to 7 pm. Monday, Dec. 4, in the Montgomery Steward Chapel. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Pueblo Christian Center followed by burial at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Curtis' behalf to Bethel Bible College through Pueblo Christian Center, 1605 S. Pueblo Blvd., Pueblo, CO 81005.
