Howard Passed from this life on July 5, 2022 at the age of 101 years, 9 months and 15 days.
Born September 20, 1920 in Pueblo Colorado. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann of 71 years; parents, Clarence Henry Mills and Lucy May (Biggs) Mills; siblings Bernice and Leonard.
He attended Somerlid grade school and was a Centennial High School, graduate class of 1938. In 1939 he left to attend the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in Washington D.C.
Howard worked for Jackson Chevrolet until 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the Field Artillery Unit as a radio repairman. When his unit shipped out they landed at Omaha Beach (thankfully not the first day). They then followed General Patton all across France and into Germany where he became involved in the battle of the bulge.
After his discharge in December 1945 he went back to work for Jackson Chevrolet.
On April 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Cielinski and the couple made Pueblo their home. In 1955 he went to work for Southern Colorado Power Company as a Radio Engineer and retired in 1985 as an Electrical Engineer.
Howard and Mary Ann enjoyed traveling and fishing. They were avid bowlers winning many awards.
After his retirement they purchased a motorhome and traveled the
United States from border to border.
Howard and MaryAnn were life long members of St. Pius X Catholic Church and were part of the original founders of the church.
He is survived by special nieces and nephews
We would like to thank New Century Hospice for the amazing care, compassion, kindness, and respect that was given to him by his “Angel” Veronica, Nurse Diamond and all of the care staff for their visits and spiritual guidance.

I started working at “the power company” in 1974 in the engineering department. Our department at the time was like a big family. During that time, I got to know and work with Howard “up close and personal.” I was ‘pretty much’ as extroverted as one can get…and, Howard was unequivocally the diametric opposite. Furthermore, Howard was 27 years older than I. Nevertheless, as members of that “work-family,” we developed a special “closeness.”
One of my fondest memories is when another of our “work brothers,” Milton Vanderwalker, and I “personally and specially” helped Howard to build his new garage. We’ve got stories to tell about that experience.
I left the engineering department after 10 years and moved “uptown” into an administrative capacity; so, I say with regret, I didn’t get to spend the remaining portion of my 21 year stint working directly with Howard.
Another regret: My wife and I completely missed his obituary or, I guarantee that we would have been there for his funeral mass.
This much I can say: I consider myself very lucky to have known and worked with him. He was a “very special” coworker/colleague, husband, veteran — and just downright damn good human being, who deserved to live every one of those almost 102 years richly.
I am the Director at New Century Hospice and I felt honored to be a part of the team while we cared for Mr. Mills. A special Thank you to the family for recognizing my staff and being such an amazing part of his care. He was truly lucky to have family so involved.
Reunited today with MaryAnn and our Lord. Rest in peace Howard.
