Wayne P. Latka
August 15, 1936 ~ December 14, 2024
Born in:
Lime, Colorado
Resided in:
Pueblo, Colorado
Wayne Latka, 88, was drafted by the Lord on December 14, 2024, to be the starting pitcher on Heaven’s number one team. Wayne didn’t want to turn down this magnificent offer, so he boarded the early morning train and began his journey. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Candace (Candy); sons, Heath, Travis, and Wayne Jr.; and many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Two of his most precious and beloved grandchildren, Kane and Lily Latka, are especially grieving the loss of their Papa.
Wayne was preceded by his parents, John and Bessie (Conner) Latka, and his three brothers and two sisters.
Wayne was born in Lime, Colorado, on August 15, 1936. In 1952, at the age of 16, he was selected as the most outstanding baseball player in the Old Timers Baseball Association. As a result, he was awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to see the first two games of the World Series at Ebbets Field in New York. While in high school, he also coached the girls’ softball team. Wayne went on to play for several minor league teams, including Jones Mortuary.
He worked at the Colorado State Hospital for over 20 years, drove the City Park train, and recently retired from his position at SRDA as the School Crossing Guard Clerk. In addition, Wayne drove for Meals on Wheels and served as a crossing guard for many years. He had a great love for fishing and camping in Creede, Colorado with his family, watching football (especially CU Buffaloes), the Broncos, and, of course, baseball.
Wayne will be deeply missed, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. As per Wayne’s wishes, no services will be held.
Wayne is missed in so many ways and I so many lives. Though I knew him from LOL reading about his life touched my heart. He will be missed but he will be forever loved.
Dear Candy and family, I want to express my condolences, I always remember Wayne as a very good person and will plant a tree in his honor. He always had a smile on his face. Sad day.
Tom Latka
Mr. Latka’s passing really saddens me. He and my dad (Willie Hill) played a lot of ball together and were friends for a long time, so when I think of my dad’s baseball days, I think of Mr. Latka as well. My condolences to the Latka family.
Very sad to see this. My father was friends with Wayne for many, many years and I remember him well from when my siblings and I were children. My father Willie Hill, Wayne and Alex Pena framed some of my earliest years. God bless you, sir and many condolences to your family.
I have no words Candy ! Richard Graston called me today (Sat) and told me about Wayne. I am so very sad, for you, me and the Latka family. You know all the menace that he, me and Richard caused at the State Hospital. We had so many laughs. I would go home and tell Jack how tired they made me from laughing. Please know you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the memories Wayne, rest in peace and say Hi
to Jack if you get to see him.
He had the B.E.S.T. smile! We loved his time he spent with us at Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church in Beulah. He will be missed!
