Vernon Sumner Porter, 84, passed away Feb. 7, 2020. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Marcia Porter; daughter, Laura (Gerald) Knapic; son, Stuart Porter, DVM; grandchildren, Scott Williams, Kayla (Gunter) Ainsworth, Katrina (Matthew) Scruggs and Tyler Porter; and great-grandson, Remington. Vernon D. Porter graduated from Centennial High School, class of 1953. He then went on to college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass. He graduated in the spring of 1957 with a double Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He married Marcia Drescher of Waterbury, Conn. in November of 1957. They then moved back to Pueblo, Colo. where Vernon began working at CF&I Steel Corporation. He held various management positions at CF&I, ending his 33 year career as Superintendent of the Rail Mill. Vernon also went to work at Colorado Silica Sand in Colorado Springs as the operations manager. He then went to Armco Steel in Kansas City, Kans. to develop and build a new Rod Mill. Vernon was an avid outdoors man who loved to fly fish, high, water ski and snow ski. He enjoyed history, traveling and being with his family. His wife Marcia states, “It was a privilege to have him as my husband.” Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium.
