Ronald R. Schulz, 85, of Monte Vista, Colo., passed away March 23, 2005, in Pueblo, Colo. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Schulz of Monte Vista; children, Betsy (Brian Lavelle) of Oakland, Calif., Doug (Diane) of Littleton, Paul (Joanie) of Fort Collins, Jim (Misty) of Monroe, Wash. and Keith (Terri) of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandchildren, Devin and Ethan Lavelle, Greg, Joel, Cecily, Farrell, Avalyn, Jake, and Lily Schulz; sister-in-law, Margaret Little; brother-in-law, Don (Betty) Mittelstaedt; nieces, Dianne Blakeslee, Barbara Flick and Roxie Rice; nephews, Greg (Barbara) Smith and Brian (Debra) Ages; and many friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Gerhard and Edna Schulz; and sister, Dorrene (Sid) Huyser. Ron was born March 17, 1920, in Big Timber, Mont., was raised on a ranch, and graduated from the University of Montana in 1943 with degrees in Forestry and Range Management. After serving his country in the South Pacific during World War II in the U. S. Marine Corps, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 35 years in Montana and Colorado, retiring in 1979. After retirement, Ron was extensively involved in his community, serving as Land Use Administrator for Rio Grande County, on the Monte Vista City Council for 12 years, 8 years as Mayor, on numerous boards and commissions, and was chosen 'Monte Vista Man Of The Year.' He was also an active member of Monte Vista United Methodist Church. Ron was an avid bowler, hunter, gardener and loved taking his daily walks. He also was a sports enthusiast and was a loyal supporter of the Monte Vista Pirates. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the Monte Vista United Methodist Church with Reverend Joyce Snapp officiating. At his request, cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium in Pueblo.
