September 14, 1930 ~ November 1, 2026
Born in:
Weston, Colorado
Resided in:
Pueblo, Colorado
Pete left this world November 1, 2026, surrounded by those who loved him, following a long two-week stay in the hospital. Although, he spent 96 years on earth, his time with us felt far too short. The life he lived was filled with hard work, laughter, love, and a whole lot of heart.
Born and raised in Weston, Colorado and the surrounding small mountain towns, Pete was a true cowboy. He grew up taking care of animals including horses, chickens, pigs, a stray bobcat and what ever animal that seemed to stroll his way. He generously helped his father with whatever means necessary to care for the ranch and family. In his late teens and early twenty’s, he helped his father cutting hay for self and local ranchers and soon began cutting timber throughout the Cuchara mountain range and the Fort Garland area for local coal miners. Using draft horses for logging work and riding to school he developed a love for horses and became an adamant horse lover and trainer that he carried throughout his life. He remained riding horses until the age of 86.
Pete met his wife, Ramona Pacheco in Trinidad, CO, and were married April 28, 1962. They remained married for 25 years. After divorcing, they stayed close friends. They shared doctor’s appointments, holidays, children’s birthdays, vacations and frequent trips to Cripple Creek together.
From the union in marriage, Pete is survived by daughters, Bea and Jill Chavez; son, Robert Chavez, youngest daughter, Maryjean Chavez (Steve Martinez); granddaughter, Ericka Chavez; and great-granddaughter, Rhyanna Cole.
Pete is preceded in death by beloved son, Pater James Chavez; spouse, Ramona Pacheco; baby grandson, Elias Cole; his sister, Mary Zamora; and brothers, Lee and Max Chavez.
Soon after Marriage, Pete and Ramona moved to Pueblo, Colorado, where he worked for Parkview before landing a job for the City of Pueblo for 27 years, retiring in September 1993. Pete was a hard worker and took pride in a job well done. He brought grit, determination and an unwavering work ethic to everything he did.
Pete had his own way of showing love. Sometimes it came through a helping hand, a bit of advice, or simply being there when someone needed him. Other times, it came with a little teasing, an ornery grin or a good laugh.
He is leaving behind countless memoires and a lasting impact on those fortunate to know him.
Pete had a magnetic personality; he drew people to him. Friends and acquittances lined up to go horseback riding with him. He was always active and enjoyed fishing camping and hunting. There was nothing that kept Pete from completely his task at
hand. His keen sense for problem solving was unwavering, He also had a sixth sense for the mountains. One could never get lost when they were with Pete. In later years, he enjoyed watching westerns on TV and musicals. He had quite the sweet tooth and loved to laugh. His smile was dazzling and lit up the room.
There is only one Pete and he will be forever missed and loved and always one of a kind.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has provided kindness and prayers throughout this difficult time. Thank you for loving Pete, for being part of his life and for carrying his memory forward
