Mildred June Gust Mattingly, 94, May 3, 1927 – November 1, 2021. Mildred was born on May 3, 1927, in Pueblo, to William Sterling and Minion Edith (Riley) Gust. She graduated high school as a proud Centennial Bulldog in 1945. She attended Pueblo Junior College and then went off to Western State where she received her degree in History with a teaching certificate. Mildred was a teacher in District 60 for 31 years and so enjoyed seeing former students out and about in Pueblo. In 1957 she married Donald Mattingly and together they raised 3 daughters. Milly loved Colorado History. On weekends, you could find the family out camping and discovering another part of Colorado or enjoying their little piece of Colorado at their cabin in Westcliffe. After retiring, she continued subbing and traveled throughout the world. Milly absolutely cherished chatting with locals, getting to know them on a personal level, and learning all she could about their culture. Many trips were taken with her husband and family, her daughters, grandchildren, cousins, sister, brothers, and friends. Milly was a lifelong Democrat who loved to talk politics and shared her opinions even if you didn’t want to hear them. In 1976, she was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and at 67 she became the Colorado House of Representatives representative for Pueblo’s District 47. She enjoyed and adored all of her political buddies. They even named her Democrat of the year in 1988. Milly had a wonderful sense of humor. She always said, “Never lose it, even if you are mad as hell!” She was feisty as ever and always involved in plenty of shenanigans and malarkey along the way. Milly taught her girls to always work for women’s rights. She had them walking precincts sitting in a wagon before they could walk. Milly was also a lover of books. She devoured volumes of literature weekly. She was Irish through and through and made her daughters promise to visit Ireland after she died or she would come back and haunt them.
Survivors include her 3 daughters and their families, Kris Mattingly, Pueblo, CO., Terri Mattingly Puryear, Pueblo, CO. and her daughter Madison, Susan Mattingly (Bill) Enright, Broomfield, CO. and their children Quinn and Liam. Also survived by her sister, Mary Alice May, stepson Doug Johnson (Brenda) Chandler AZ. and their daughters, Savannah, Delaney and Kelsey (Andrew) and their son Liam, step daughter Karen (Dan) Proesh, Maplewood, MN. and their children Amber and Andy and 2 great grandchildren along with many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Family and Friends are invited to attend Milly’s memorial graveside service at Roselawn Cemetery in Pueblo on Friday June 3rd at 10:30am. Reception to follow noon to three at her favorite restaurant and stomping grounds, La Tronica’s Restaurant, 1143 E. Abriendo.
