Mr. Michael A. Spahr
October 8, 1940 ~ April 7, 2026
Born in:
Detroit , Michigan
Resided in:
Pueblo, Colorado
Mike was born October 8, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, to Dave and Peg Spahr, their only child. He graduated from high school in Grand Island, Nebraska, in 1958. He and Sandy were married in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1961. David joined the family while they were living in Nebraska. They moved to be closer to Mike’s parents in the Detroit area where Diana and Stacey were born. Work moved Mike’s family to Tennessee where Steven joined the family. Then they fulfilled a life-long dream and moved to Colorado, where Mike entered the construction trades. Mike also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration during this time. But the moves were not over, this time Sandy’s employment took them to Manistee, Michigan. After several wonderful years in Manistee, Mike supported Sandy’s call to pastoral ministry and they moved to Harpster, Ohio. After seminary the first assignment was to Newaygo, Michigan, where they served until retirement. During this time Mike was introduced to prison ministry where he loved serving. They returned to their beloved Colorado and Mike became a Certified Lay Minister for the United Methodist Church and served three churches. During this time he was for a term Board Chair for the Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center (http://hikeandlearn.org) and loved volunteering for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (http://hsppr.org)Back in Colorado, Mike continued his prison ministry with Kairos International Prison Ministry (http://KairosPrisonMinistry.org) and at Youth Offender Service.

I just heard and am so very sad. I worked one election with Mike in the “box room”. Many hours of just the two of us. Lots of time to get to know each other. What a calming spirit he had. What a team we made. My heart and prayers go to the family.
Mike, a wonderful man and a Brother in Christ. Sharlie Morel
I was so so saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. I knew Mike through the Mountain Park Environmental center/Nature and Wildlife Discovery center where we were both on the Board of directors for many years. Mike was such a bright light and such a gift to all the many projects and volunteer activities he was involved in.
My condolences to Sandy and all of his family and many close friends.
My first meeting with Mike was at the shelter. I was picking up some kittens to foster and he had dropped some off. He bubbled with enthusiasm about his “graduating ” babies and I had endless questions for him. Every time I saw him I left with a smile and more. Information about fostering. I will miss him so much
Dear Sandy, Diane and others of the family,
Mike was a good friend, as you know, and a light unto the world! His work with Kairos was a most Christian effort that Jesus Christ through Matthew 25 directs each of us to do for our fellow human beings, especially those who are marginalized or in prison. He was special in so many ways and always jumped in when there was a task to be done!
I share in your grief and pray that you will be comforted by knowing that he is in the presence of God the Father, and he is rid of the terrible cancer that took him too soon.
Love you all,
Skip
Mike was a champion for the broken and most vulnerable. He will be greatly missed by his Kairos community.
Celebrating his promotion to Glory! Cindy H.
I just heard. What a shock! And what a loss. I hold you and your family in my prayers for I know your loss is great. When the blessing is great, the loss has to be great as well. Please know that you are surrounded with love and prayers in this time of grief and healing.
Mike always reminded me of the joy in service to others. His wholehearted dedication to God brought peace to everyone he knew. Mike, you will be sorely missed.
Missing you Mikey! You were such a loving, caring man…and of course we all know a bit of a character!
Always so welcoming to us! Your favorite cousin!
I love and miss you Papa. Xoxo
I will dearly miss Mike. I spent many hours transporting vehicles with him where we had many hours to talk and get to know each other. He was a great listener and had many interesting stories and life lessons to share. My sincere well wishes to his family. Rest in peace my buddy.
