Rosary Service for Leo and Vicenta Martinez:

It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden loss of our beloved father Leo B. Martinez. Leo was born on September 20, 1935, in Arroyo Agua, New Mexico and received his angel wings on April 7, 2023, with family at his side. At the time of his passing, he was 87 years of age and resided in Pueblo, CO.
Leo was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He loved his family enormously and dedicated his life to being the caring husband and father he was. Leo enjoyed fishing and hunting in the local mountain ranges especially with his sons and friends. For nearly 68 years he enjoyed his love filled home with his beloved wife, Vicenta (Vicky) in Leadville and later in Pueblo. Leo retired from the Climax mine followed by several years working for City Market in Vail. He so enjoyed the many friends he was so fortunate to have both in the Leadville and Pueblo communities.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vicenta Martinez; his parents, Jose and Rosita Martinez; his three sons, Melvin, Bruce and Stanley Martinez; twelve siblings and many family relatives.
Leo is survived by his sons, Alvin and Joseph Martinez; daughters, Janet and Melinda Martinez, and Vickie Garcia. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The Family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the sympathy, comforting words, prayers and all expressions of kindness and concern. May God continue to bless you.

  1. So sorry to hear about Leo. I have some great memories of him from Nylene acres and when we worked on the muck crew at Climax mine. Arguably, one of the most dangerous crews since we handled dynamite and explosives and had get into those fingers to loosen the rock.Leo held one of the most dangerous positions in the mine and that being of a hangman. Three of us could load a 27 ton muck load trains out of 309, 311 stork level one of the rockiest part of the mine, in under 10 minutes never breaking a cable and the train stopping. We were a great crew. And I was right at a high school and the youngest man on that crew. RIP my friend. Our sincere condolences and prayers for your family!

  2. So sorry to hear about Leo. I have some great memories of him from Nylene Acres and when we worked on the muck crew at Climax Mine. Arguably, one of the most dangerous crews since we handled explosives and had to get into those fingers to loosen the rock and there was always a possibility of a Slusher cable breaking. Leo held one of the most dangerous positions in the mine and that being of a hangman. Three of us could load a 2 muck train out of 309, 311 drift on stork level one of the rockiest part of the mine, in under 10 minutes never breaking a cable and the train never stopping. We were a great crew and one of the most productive. I was right at a high school and the youngest man on that crew. RIP my friend. Our sincere condolences and prayers for your family!

He was a hangman the most dangerous position one could hold at the mine. We could load a muck train in under 10 mins out of Stork 309 – 311 one of the rockiest areas never breaking a slusher cable or having the train stop. Rest in peace my friend.
