LaVona L. Thomas. Praise the Lord!!! On Aug. 7, 2009, after a valiant and courageous battle LaVona went to heaven to join her family and friends who were waiting for her. A lifelong Puebloan-born May 17, 1916, she was preceded in death by parents, Holger and Iva Henderson; brothers, Donald Gene, Bruce D. and his wife, Harriett; sisters, Donna L. Jackson and Maragene L. Shore. LaVona is survived by her husband of 73 years, John W.; son, William M. 'Bill' and his wife, Judy; daughter, Sandra Kaye and Bert Cooper; granddaughter, Julie C. and Dan Chamberlain; grandson, Jeffrey W. and RoseAnna; great-grandsons, Joshua and Jason Chamberlain, Zachary and Trevor Thomas; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Jackson and Lloyd Shore and many nieces, nephews and friends. LaVona was our 'Dr. Pepper and popsicle gal' and her fried chicken and potato salad were the best. Mom loved taking care of her home and yard filled with many beautiful flowers and rose bushes. Family get-togethers were something she always looked forward to, traveling to see her sister and family, going to Beulah for picnics. Mom was so proud of her family's many accomplishments in their respective lives. She was a 67 year member of First Baptist Church where she was a Deaconess Emeritus, a 66 year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha-Alpha Delta chapter in which she spent many hours with her sorority friends testing the hearing of school children in Pueblo schools. Other community involvements were a USO volunteer during WWII, American Cancer Society, Election Judge, Demolay Mother's Circle, and PTA. Many thanks go to ALL of the care-givers from Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Life Care Center - especially Felicia. Viewing from 2 p.m. until service time Wednesday. Funeral service, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, in the Montgomery & Steward Chapel with the Reverend Brad Henderson officiating. Interment, 11 a.m. Thursday at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and food, donations in her memory may be made to 'Operation Christmas Child' in care of Central Christian Church or Sangre de Cristo Hospice, through Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors, 1317 N. Main St., Pueblo, Colo. 81003. Online condolences, www.montgomerysteward.com
