LaVerne (née Gassino) Smith, 87, passed away May 31, 2020, in Aurora, Colo. Survived by her brother, William Gassino of Pueblo; nephews, Gary Gassino of Arvada, Colo. And Mark (Peggy) Gassino of Pueblo; niece, Dian (Gerry) Montgomery of Pueblo; cousins; great and great-great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her devoted life partner, Duaine Smith; and sister-in-law, Ines Gassino. LaVerne was born to Frank and Teresa Gassino in Trinidad, Colo., on March 30, 1933. She taught for Pueblo School District 60 from 1955 through 1957, then moved to Littleton, Colo. and retired from the Denver Public Schools. While teaching in Pueblo, LaVerne received the Outstanding Elementary School Teacher of America award. LaVerne had a passion for rescuing cats and wore the title “The Crazy Cat Lady of Denver!” with pride. Cremation at Montgomery & Steward Crematorium and private inurnment in the Mountain View Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum, in Pueblo, have taken place.
