Jessie May Frisbie Kettering was born January 17, 1888, in Lake View, Iowa, to Fred and Sarah Scandrett Frisbie. She grew up on a farm east of Blackhawk Lake: she attended Wall Lake #7 through 8th grade and the Sac City Sewing School, becoming a proficient seamstress. In 1911, she moved to Des Moines where she worked as a seamstress and companion to an elderly lady, Josephine Mosley, Later she came to Lake City and was employed by Dr. and Mrs. G.L. Pray. On October 8, 1919, she was united in marriage to Howard L. Kettering in Lake City. The couple lived and raised their family on a farm northeast of Lake View. This union was blessed with 3 children, Lois, Jean, and Fred. Howard died in February of 1964. Following Howard's death, she remained on the farm a year and then moved into Griffin apartments in Lake View where she lived until entering Black Hawk Lifecare Center in July of 1993 at the age of 105. Jessie was a member of Lakes United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxillary, Rest Club and a past member of Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, games, baking cookies for older folks, visiting family and friends, and of course, her church. She drove her car until 100 years of age and had the distinction of being Iowa's oldest resident. On May 11, 2000, she passed away at Black Hawk Lifecare Center in Lake View at the age of 112 years, 3 months, and 24 days. Those who preceded her in death were her husband; her parents; daughter, Lois and husband her Gordon Rossow; great grandson, Brandon Baker; 3 brothers, James, Milom, and Lee and his wife Ina Frisbie; 4 sisters, Vern and her husband Ernie Anson, Mildred and her husband Harry Dart, Alice Bell, and Jennie and her husband Frank Smith. Her survivors include one son, Fred and his wife Darla Kettering of Pueblo, Colorado; one daughter, Jean and her husband John Baker of Lake View, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Mark and Mary Rossow of Jefferson, Iowa, Lexa and Jim Braxmeler of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, Ann and David Bennett of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, Karl Baker of Alta, Iowa, Drs. Amy and Tony Plana of Burlington, Connecticut, Darrell Storm of Stockton, California, Linda and Eric Sorensen of Delta, Colorado, and Debra McDowell of Safety Harbor, Florida; 14 great grandchildren; 2 cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
