James Douglas Evans, Jr., affectionately known as “Jimmy,” “Buck,” and “JD,” passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 76.Born on June 17, 1950 in Pueblo, Colorado, Jimmy was the first-born and only son of the late James D. Evans, Sr. and Bertha Eloise “Lois” Evans. He was raised in Pueblo and graduated from Centennial High School before attending Southern Colorado State College (now CSU-Pueblo), where he studied engineering and forestry.
Shortly after high school, Jimmy’s adventurous spirit led him to Alaska, where he homesteaded property in the Fairbanks and Anchorage areas. Falling in love with the region, he worked as a guide for big game hunting tours, leveraging his vast knowledge of the local terrain.
Jimmy lived a simple life and enjoyed the great outdoors in both Alaska and Colorado. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, tracking, following the Iditarod race (with a special fondness for his own sled dog, Bilbo), carpentry, and collecting coins and stamps, among others. An avid reader with a deep passion for history and literature, he kept stacks of books on hand and could converse knowledgeably on nearly any historical topic.
Though independent, Jimmy cherished his family and extended family in Colorado and Alaska. He shared a particularly close bond with his grandmother, Mrs. Huppert; while living in Alaska, he thoughtfully sent her a tape player with recorded messages so she could follow his adventures and hear his voice. Jimmy will be remembered for his caring nature, his kindness toward others, and his love for animals.
He is survived by his cousins—including Linda Rae (Jerry) Russell, Chuck (Denise) Hood, Billie Jean (the late Dave) Cortese, Denise Thacker, and Tommy (Kay) Smith—as well as numerous second and third cousins, and his special friend, Bernadine Trujillo. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Lois.
Cremation will take place through Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors. In accordance with his private nature, there will be no viewing or formal service. The family encourages contributions to the charity of your choice in memory of Jimmy “Buck” Evans, remembering his love of the outdoors through nature and animals. Online condolences may be shared at www.MontgomerySteward.com.
