Resided in: Pueblo, CO

Hester E. Jeffryes, 86, born Aug. 28, 1921, in Cokedale, Colo., lost her battle in life on Oct. 20, 2007, but immediately was promoted to be caretaker of God's heavenly creatures. Everyone who knew Hester (if not by name) remembers the lady who made her daily rounds (rain, sleet, snow) in Belmont to feed the birds and any animals in need of help. Her deep love of nature and animals was unparalleled. Her greatest joys were mountain trips, hiking and exploring all the wonders around her. She thought extravagance and all the waste and hate in the world was unforgivable. Her love of family, friends and even the homeless strangers was enviable. The stories told since her death, even by casual acquaintances, have been many, both heartwarming and funny. Her philosophy: Be kind, compassionate, judgement free and do things your way. She often hummed to the tune of 'My Way.' Hester worked in the medical field all her life and retired from Parkview Hospital as an assistant surgical technician. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Givens-Jeffryes; grandson, Lance McKinney and his daughter, Katie; granddaughter, Cheryl (Jason) Gutierrez; son-in-law, Charles (Janet) McKinney; dear friend, Rose Mary McKinney and her daughters, Kelly and Jody, who gave Hester their ongoing support; and, of course, her constant companion, her cat, 'Boots.' Special thanks to neighbors, Karen Miller and Steve Fraterelli who brought her many bouquets and smiles and spent hours sitting by Hester's side and talking with her right to the end. Also, Judy (August) Gagliardi and their family, who for years were there to help at a moment's notice; Gil and Marilyn Montez for their caring ways for years and her very special friend and a big part of the family, Pat Green. Our gratitude and thank you to Sangre de Cristo Hospice and the many wonderful people who made her last days more tolerable. There will be no viewing. Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium. Memorial service, 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, in the Montgomery & Steward Chapel. In lieu of food and flowers, memorials may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice or Pueblo Animal Shelter through Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors, 1317 N. Main St., Pueblo, CO 81003.
