Born in: Pueblo, Colorado
Resided in: Pueblo, Colorado

Harry Matthew Willcox, known as “Matt,” passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Harry Willcox and Elnora Brown Willcox. He leaves behind to treasure his memory, his wife, Peggy Runco Willcox; his devoted children, Matthew Willcox, Kyle (Louann) Willcox and Jessica; along with four cherished grandsons: Dominic and Vincent Willcox and Levi and Owen Straubel. Matt is also survived by his loving siblings, Jack Willcox and Lynn (Leonard) Harvey; and his extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Matt worked at the Colorado State Fair for almost thirty years, retiring in 2003. He then ran his own business, MK Handyman Service, for many years. A welder by trade, Matt could fix most anything – cars, plumbing, tile, walls – you name it and he could fix it – but his favorite hobby was wood working. He appreciated the simple beauty in the various grains of wood and the personal satisfaction that he found in working the wood to create a new thing of beauty. He had a creative eye and was not timid about trying new designs, methods and materials as he made lovely wood furniture, vases, jewelry, and more.
Matt loved a good song, a good joke, and a good meal. From John Wayne and Disney classics to romantic tear jerkers – he enjoyed watching (and often rewatching) a good movie. He preferred to be outdoors – hunting, fishing, or just enjoying the wonder of Colorado scenery and weather.
Above all, Matt was unwavering in his dedication to his family. He faced life’s challenges with courage, strength, and a quiet conviction that was and will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew him. Celebration of Matt’s Life, 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at the Colorado State Fairgrounds 4H Dining Hall. Full obituary and online condolences, at www.MontgomerySteward.com

  5. Peggy and family, I’m so sorry to hear of Matt’s passing. He was a great guy, my favorite of the State Fair group! They would come to Hoch’s for drinks and a “gripe session ” about what had happened at the Fair that day. Matt was always so fun to be around. He will be missed by many! You and your family are in my prayers. RIP Matt, you were one of the good guys!
