Gary Woodrow Schockey, 77, passed away Feb. 9, 2014, peacefully surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 7, 1936, in Independence, Kan., to Charles and Ruby (Gordon) Schockey, who are both deceased. He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Hart, on Oct. 8, 1956, in Monte Vista, Colo. He is survived by two daughters, Lori (Rod) Schockey Kehler, of Rio Hondo, Tex., Sheri (Todd) Schockey Lasher, of Pueblo West, Colo. Gary was not only a loving husband of 57 years, but a grandpa to five grandchildren, Samantha Taylor, Billy Jay Taylor, Ashley Taylor, Haylee Lasher, Jared Lasher; brother, Larry (Peggy) Schockey, of Monte Vista, Colo.; two sisters, Cheryl Lewis and Glenda Watkins, of Colorado Springs. Gary was preceded in death by his son, Thomas (Tommy) Kevin Schockey; brother, Gordon Dale Schockey; four sisters, Eva Dell Caudill, Audrey Pat Head, Donna Jo Scmohl and Ruby Kay Thomas. Gary was a longtime resident of Monte Vista, Colo. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served eight years for his country. He was self employed and served as a city council member for eight years and also served a term as Mayor of Monte Vista. After retirement, he and his wife bought an RV and traveled the highways. In 2006, they settled in Colorado City. He enjoyed telling a good story and never met a stranger. Gary will be missed dearly. Very sad to hear about Gary’s Passing, my Condolences and prayers go out to the whole family, I worked for Gary in my younger years when he Ran Toms Foods, I learned so much from him about business, it taught me that if I worked hard I could achieve anything, He was a great friend and mentor to me, I am Proud to have known him and his family.

  2. Deepest sympathy on the loss of my former co-worker and friend when we were both in Monte Vista at Dr. Wadleigh’s Veterinary Clinic in 1950-51.

  3. So sorry to hear of Garys passing. He was such a fun man with a great sense of humor. Counted he and Shirley as good people and nice friends to have.
