Clara Hefte Schmidt, 99, passed away Thurs., March 15, 2007, at the Belmont Lodge Nursing Home in Pueblo, Colo. She was born in the rural Staples, Minnesota, area on February 8, 1908, to Botolf and Ragnhild Hefte and died at 99 years of age. Her husband, Vivian; and son, Donald, precede her in death. Clara taught school for 36 years, teaching elementary through high school mathematics. Many years she headed the Teacher Training Department in Staples. She lived most of her life in the Staples area, but moved to Pueblo West, Colo., in 1993, to live with her daughter, Betty Lenz. She is also survived by daughter, Waverly Machamer of Denver; one sister, Bergliot Puttler of San Marino, Calif.; ten grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Winifred Schmidt and Leona Schmidt both of Staples and Isabel Hollis of Spokane, Wash. Clara enjoyed crocheting afghans and attending Bible study. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tues. Mar. 20, 2007, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1801 Sheridan Rd., Pueblo, and burial will be in Esterdy Cemetery at a later date.
