Bessie May (Keenan) Mayes, 102, departed this life on July 17, 2013. She was born in Benkelman, Neb., on May 2, 1911. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; son, Robert; and ten siblings. Survived by son, Donald (Kay) Mayes; daughter, Sharon (Dan) Summers, daughter-in-law, Beverly Mayes; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside service, 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of food or flowers, please donate to Sangre de Cristo Hospice or the charity of your choice. I am glad that I was able to meet her and get to know her, albeit brefly, last summer. The Braukman family sends their condolences. We are sorry that we will not be able to attend the service.

Bessie was a roll model. Can’t imagine what a million things she saw as she grew up in Nebraska and Colorado. She was such a fine lady in every sense of the word and we have such wonderful memories of her through the years. Ken and Roger figure that she could have killed them for their childish pranks when they were young and that she didn’t was a testimony of her compassion.
I know that Heaven’s doors were opened wide to receive her.
