Barbara J. “JoAnn” Johnson born October 1, 1933, in Boone, Colorado, received her well-deserved angel wings on July 2, 2021. JoAnn was predeceased by parents, John and Gladys Shiflett; husband, Robert R. Johnson; son, Bobby Johnson; beloved son-in-law, Jack Crawford; sisters, Shirley Jean Shiflett, Dorothy Hanson, Sharon Bastian; brothers, Charles Shiflett, Kenneth Shiflett, James Shiflett; sisters-in-law, Marge Shiflett and Rexine Shiflett. She is survived by loving daughter, Linda Crawford; brother, Gary (Shirley) Shiflett; special nieces and nephews, Lydia Burgard, Shawn (Tanya) Shiflett, and Kirk (Rose) Shiflett; long-time friends, Alison Blackburn and Bonifacio Rodriquez; and her kitties, Mandy and Amber.
Spunky and independent, JoAnn left Colorado as a teenager to follow her sister, Dorothy, to Alaska. There she met, fell in love and married her husband, Robert. They became parents to Linda and Bobby. JoAnn was an exceptional mom and loved her children more than anything in the world. After living in Alaska and Georgia, the family moved to California where they owned and operated a motel and bar. Returning to Colorado, Robert worked in construction and Joann worked as a waitress and in retail. She later baked for TJ Cinnamons, The Cookie Store, and St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. In retirement, JoAnn volunteered at St. Mary Corwin Hospital and later was employed again at the Information Desk and in the Gift Shop. She retired for the last time in 2006. In retirement she enjoyed traveling with her daughter, dining out, Silver Sneakers, relaxing with coffee at Barnes and Noble, reading, and taking care of her home and yard. She loved animals, especially elephants and kitties, babies, the color purple, and Sunday morning with the Pueblo Chieftain. JoAnn managed her health problems with courage, strength and grace. She taught us lessons in humility, patience and kindness until her last day.
Heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to friends who visited, gave advice, baked, cooked, did errands and chores, offered support and love: Dorothy O’Dowd, Cathy Herr, Rayann Orr, Florence Blackwell, Harvi and Steve (and Roxy) Dick, Diana and Ed Johnson, Judy Lee, Johanna Aragon, Tom and Marilyn Wagner, Janet Creswell, Mona Askwig, Cathy Valenzuela, Joyce Allen, Karma Bright, Jeannette Fredregill, Colleen and Scott Fisher, Laurel Campbell, Diana Mondragon and Laurel Bayless. Special thank you to caretakers, Betty Molina, Michelle Maestas, Jeannie Havelka, Paulette Short and Mary Youngblood, and Sangre de Cristo Community Care staff, especially Haide Olivas, Chris Romero, Annette Martinez, Johanna Rimpley, and Chaplain Michael Smith.
