October 13, 1950 ~ December 28, 2021
Born in: Bogota, Colombia
Resided in:
Pueblo, Colorado
Dr. Anthony Ortegon, 10/13/1950-12/28/2021, a local physician for over forty (40) years in Pueblo, died unexpectedly on December 28, 2021, while surrounded by his entire immediate family.
Despite being born in Bogota, Colombia in 1950, Dr. Ortegon made America his home. Along with his wife of forty-five (45) years, Vera Ortegon, the two of them materialized their version of the American dream. Their truly valued treasures began with their two sons, Anthony and Arthur; evolved to include their respective wives, Courtney and McKinsie. Yet, his most treasured earthly role was being the grandfather to four (4) incredible grandchildren, Bennett, Olive, Isla, and Briggs.
After graduating college in two and half years at the age of 17, he attended the University of Miami’s medical school to start his lifelong passion for medicine and his patients. Dr. Ortegon was a faithful husband, devoted father, insatiable reader, avid skier, butterfly collector, and world traveler.
There will be a private memorial held on January 7th to celebrate the incredible life of Dr. Ortegon. Donations may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or St. John Neumann Catholic School, 2415 E. Orman Ave., Pueblo, CO 81004, in the name of The Ortegon Family. Online condolences, www.MontgomerySteward.com
Dear Vera and family, I first met Dr. Ortegon when you brought 4 year old Tonito to the Temple Baptist Daycare and into my charge for his care. He was part of my student car pool also. What an amazing family you are and such an important part of the Pueblo Community. A few years ago I met you both in a local store and we visited briefly. So wonderful to see you once again and hear stories about the boys and their lives. I am so sorry to just learn of his passing and wanted to send my love to each of you. God bless you at this time and may He give you the love, comfort and peace only He can provide. Fond memories always…

Tony, along with Vera, light up this world in very special and unique ways. Tony’s light and joy for life will always be helpful and needed. His smile inspired me to smile and to think higher thoughts. Light from the soul never goes out. I will always respect and appreciate Tony. Love to Vera.
Always positive, always a smile or laugh. I often reminisce on the collecting trips we had. You standing with your big white net billowing in the wind. Good memories that will always be there. My deepest sympathies to your family.
Vera and family. I am so sorry for your tragic loss. Tony’s passing leaves a huge hole in the Pueblo community and, of course, in your heart. He will be terribly missed by his patients, colleagues, friends and family.

Dear Vera,
I want to say how sorry I am to hear of Tony’s passing. I regarded him as a friend for
the 36 years that he saw me as a patient. He was such a vibrant individual and was taken from us way
too soon. He will be missed.
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.
Tony and I took several butterfly collecting trips together, including as roommates during a two-week trip to Peru, and I got to know him as a good friend during these times together. I will forever be indebted to him because he bandaged my lip when I cut through it in an accident in the jungles of Cameroon. I will miss him very much.
Tony was probably the first physician I was introduced to upon arrival in Pueblo. He quickly earned my respect for his candor and commitment to the community. A good doctor and a good man, he will be missed by many.
I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Your family is in my prayers.

Tony was one of the first physicians I met at Parkview ICU in 1987. I quickly realized his visits to ICU was part of his morning ritual, sharing laughs and a cup of coffee. I am better for knowing him.
