Jan Kent Dunnington

Jan K. Dunnington, 89, of Pueblo West, Colorado, passed away on July 16, 2026, after a courageous battle with leukemia, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. Born on November 3, 1936, in Macon, Missouri, Jan lived a life defined by generosity, dedication, and an unwavering love for family.

Jan was one of the first people to donate a kidney, giving this extraordinary gift to his sister Willadean Leathers on June 2, 1969. He carried a deep pride in that selfless act for the rest of his life, and it spoke volumes about the kind of man he was. Professionally, Jan rose to serve as Vice President of the International Carpenters Union in Washington, DC, a role that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to the people he represented.

Those who knew Jan knew a man who was outgoing, warm, and deeply loved by everyone around him. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing and camping. He was an avid golfer and loved traveling across the United States. Above all, he was a father to eight children and a grandfather and great-grandfather to many.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan and Vada Dunnington; his sisters, Willadean Leathers, Wanda Paulson, and Noma Childs; his brother, Wayne Dunnington; and his sons, Thomas Dunnington and David Bittner.

He is survived by his sister, Darla Shelman and her husband Marv; sons, Bart Dunnington and his wife Terri, Troy Dunnington and his wife Debbie, and Jason Dunnington; daughters, Denise Dunnington, Carla Dunnington Holzer, and Jennifer Dunnington; daughter-in-law, Joyce Bittner; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward.

At Jan’s request, there will be no services. His final resting place will be in the Mountain View Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum.
