Born in: Pueblo, Colorado
Resided in: Pueblo, Colorado

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary J. Mehle on June 30, 2026, following a brief, brave fight with gastric cancer. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado on January 29, 1954, to the late John Mehle and Angela Baudek Mehle. He was preceded in death by his sister Nancy Mehle George, who passed away unexpectedly this past Mother’s Day. Gary was also preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law Martin and Elsie Plutt.

Gary is survived by the love of his life, his wife Janice Plutt Mehle, for 49 years. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and countless cherished memories. He was a proud and loving father to Michael (Jane) Mehle, Jenna  (Garrett) Quintana, and nothing brought him more joy than being “Papa” to his grandchildren, McKenna, Addison, and Jack Mehle. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Garry George and Bob Plutt; special nieces Brittany Plutt Gill, Maren Plutt Zbacnik, and their families; as well as numerous cousins, life-long friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary surrounded himself by those who shared his same interests. One of his greatest joys was supporting his children and grandchildren at all their sporting events, even if it meant traveling.

Gary was an accomplished athlete himself, excelling in football, shot put, and discus in his high school and college years. He loved four wheeling in the Colorado mountains, golfing, and later found a passion for skeet and 5-stand shooting. He took pride in reloading his own shotgun shells. He also enjoyed his weekly Tonk games with friends and was always ready with his football pool picks every Thursday during football season.

Gary had a hidden talent for building. He built three of his own homes, his daughter’s home, and provided invaluable  guidance during the construction of his son’s home from a distance. Every project reflected his attention to detail and commitment to doing things the right way.

Gary and Janice also shared a love of travel, especially cruises, trips to Las Vegas, and golfing together. At home, Gary loved watching football, his classic Westerns, and he loved cooking and barbequing for family and friends.

Gary attended Catholic schools, including Roncalli High School until its closure, before graduating from Central High School in 1972. He earned degrees in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the then University of Southern Colorado (now CSU-P) and became a Certified Public Accountant.

During his career, he worked for the U.S. Olympic Committee, which was a perfect fit as he blended his love for sports, while serving as the Director of Finance. He retired from Pueblo Water as the Director of Finance, proudly saying he worked for one of the best run companies around.

Gary also served as Treasurer for Pueblo Diversified Industries (PDI) and the Pueblo Skeet and Trap Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s memory to PDI or Pueblo Skeet and Trap Club.
