Lewis Meade Quigg passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado, one day after his 80th birthday. Born on March 30, 1946, in Salem, Ohio, Lewis was the beloved son of Richard L (“Dick”) Quigg and Jean M. Quigg. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Kathy D. Quigg, with whom he shared nearly 40 years of marriage and partnership; his parents; brother, J. Michael Quigg; and nephew, Michael Lee. He is survived by his children, Cannon Quigg, Kelsey (Jennifer) Quigg, and Amy (Michael Cruz) Giuliano; grandchildren, Katie (Richard Blauser, Jr.) Cruz, Reagan Quigg, and Ryan Quigg; and great-grandson, Derrick James Blauser.
Lewis’s extended family and close friends will remember Lewis for his love, dedication, enduring friendships and an unwavering commitment to family, justice, and community; not to mention his quick wit and matter-of-fact approach to life’s absurdities.
He first married Candace Mudgett of Sudan, Texas, on May 25, 1968, before moving to Boulder, Colorado, where Lewis pursued his passion for law, and then back home to Pueblo. Together they had two boys, Cannon and Kelsey. He later married Kathy (Giuliano) on October 6, 1984, and together they built a life intertwined with both personal and professional success working side by side for three decades at the law firm Shaw & Quigg, P.C.
Lewis’s academic and professional accomplishments were numerous. A proud graduate of Centennial High School in Pueblo, Class of 1964, he was a varsity starter in football and basketball, earning a place in the Centennial Hall of Fame in 2018. He continued his education at Austin College, earning a BA degree in 1968, and later served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. Upon his honorable discharge, Lewis returned to the University of Colorado, where he earned his law degree in 1972. His career as a defense attorney was marked by integrity and excellence, focusing on general negligence, insurance, malpractice, and general civil practice. Among his many accolades were his admission to the bar in 1973, his membership in the Pueblo County Bar Association in 1982, later becoming President of the Bar Association. Notably, he was selected four separate times as a Colorado Super Lawyer. In 1996, he was honored with membership in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. In addition, Lewis served on the Board of Directors of Pueblo County Legal Services to indigent clients and often personally provided free legal representation to those unable to hire private counsel. He also served on the Tenth Judicial District Nominating Commission and Tenth Judicial District Performance Commission which were instrumental in the appointment of and evaluation of the local judiciary. Lewis’s dedication extended beyond his profession. He was a generous contributor to numerous charities and foundations, most notably the Pueblo YMCA, where he served for 35 years as a Board leader and later as a Board Member Emeritus. Lewis’s steady leadership on the Y Board played a very substantial role in the development of the current YMCA building and campus. His other leadership roles included serving on the Board of Directors for El Pueblo Boys Ranch, the Pueblo Community College Foundation, and the Pueblo Diversified Industries Board. As Chairman of the Pueblo Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce, his impact was felt across the community.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic endeavors, Lewis was a man of varied interests. He cherished time spent with friends at Coors Tavern and Eilers, and participated in activities like the Investment Club, NASCAR league, and the Pikes Peak Range Riders. A lifelong baseball fan, he traveled with the Okie Dokie Boys to LA Dodgers games and proudly held season tickets for the Colorado Rockies. Lewis was a golfer (until he hated it) and then picked it up again later in life, and a classic car enthusiast. He was a man with many passions that brought him joy and camaraderie.
Lewis will be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, a distinguished attorney, and a pillar of his community. His kindness, wisdom, and enduring spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
