Born in: Elizabeth, Louisiana
Resided in: Pueblo, Colorado

John William Tilton, 86, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Pueblo, Colorado. He was born on September 1, 1938, in Elizabeth, Louisiana, to John Morgan Tilton and Clara Lilly Tilton.

John proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran and went on to dedicate his career to public service as a sheriff in Prince George’s County, Maryland, retiring after many years of honorable service.

He grew up in Louisiana, raised his family in the suburbs of Maryland, and, for the last 27 years, made his home in the southern mountains of Colorado—where his heart truly belonged.

John’s life was filled with devotion to family and community. He is survived by his four children, Patricia Lynne (Charles), Timothy Wayne (Roxanne), John Patrick (Tanya), and Karen Marie; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Eileen Tilton.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Thomas Dwain.

He took great pride in his military service and law enforcement career, and found joy in simple pastimes—baking, enjoying observing and riding trains, watching classic westerns, filled his days with the music he loved—especially Elvis Presley and other 1950s favorites, and keeping a close eye on the skies as a volunteer weather observer for the National Weather Service in Fort Garland, Colorado.

John will be remembered for his steadfast integrity, and his unwavering love for his family. But more than anything, he loved people—never meeting a stranger and delighting in conversations.

  1. CandleImageJohn and I never met in person. I met him online about 16 years ago. We became actual pen pals. Writing letters. He would text some, but I enjoyed trying to read his handwriting. I could tell if he was tired or not when writing. We grew a special bond over the years as my kids grew older and my late husband sicker he was always there to listen. I remember one night he over heard that my vacuum broke. And next week a vacuum was delivered. He was just that kind of guy. I still have that vacuum. More for nostalgia. But I always felt like he helped me suck away the dirt in life. I never was able to meet him in person, but maybe he and Art can grab a beer together lol if they have that. Lol hugs to his family. He will forever be in your laughter hugging you in the wind and rolling his eyes at the stupid people on the mountains thinking they will live through their shenanigans. Lol

  2. CandleImageJohn and Tanya so sorry for your loss my heart is there for you both. ❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

  3. So many memories. I do not remember a time when he wasn’t part of our family and part of my life. ❤️ Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.🙏

  4. CandleImageThank you Mr. T for giving that troubled 16-year-old kid a second chance in life and allowing him to move in with you when he had nowhere to go. You provided for me when you did not have to. You gave excellent guidance over the years and helped me when I needed it the most. I will never forget your kindness and love.
