Consuelo Raquel Salazar Lopez

Consuelo Raquel Salazar Lopez, “Connie”, passed peacefully at home on September 10, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was more than ready to join her dear Lord in glory along with her beloved husband and soulmate, Pillie. While she made every effort to remain positive and upbeat for her loved ones, after Pillie passed, it was clear she would never get used to a world without him in it. They were married on June 15, 1953 and would have been married 67 years when he died on May 9, 2020. They shared daughters, Yvonne Lopez (Jerry) and Debra Lopez. One grandson, Kyle Lopez also survives. She was a faithful and loving wife, a wonderful mother and grandmother who encouraged her children to be strong and independent. She was constantly teaching us how to live, love, and die with grace. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and family friends whom she loved tremendously.

Her work career included the Pueblo Ordinance Depot Personnel Department where she investigated potential hires for security clearance and hired the young, recently discharged Air Force Sargent who was ever so handsome, Pillie Lopez, who would become her husband. She quit the POD after they married and did not return to the work force until her daughters went to school. She worked at the Colorado State Hospital, in the early ’60s, when the facility began the move to ‘deinstitutionalize’ patients returning them back to the community. She also worked for the “War on Poverty” program during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. Finally, she worked as a councilor at Spanish Peaks Mental Health Center during the 1970s and ’80s. Connie loved people and wanted to help in any way she could. Whether she lent a hand or an ear, she was always sincere in her caring attitude and demeanor.

Connie was the last of 9 children born to Fermina and Miguel Antonio Salazar, in Los Sauces, Colorado. The entire Salazar family has preceded her in death. It was in this home she developed her love of hard work and satisfaction with a job well done. It was also in this home she learned to love others, but more importantly, developed a profound love and faith in God.

Funeral Mass, 2 p.m. Friday, September 30, at St, Pius X Catholic Church, 3130 Morris Ave. Inurnment to follow Mass at Mountain View Cemetery. Reception to follow inurnment at St. Pius X parish hall.
