February 18, 1931 ~ May 16, 2023

Born in: Brooklyn, New York
Resided in: Pueblo, Colorado

The one and only Margaret McGowan Divelbiss passed away on May 16, 2023, in Pueblo, Colorado, at the age of 92. Maggie, as she was affectionately known, was born on February 18, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, to Gladys and Bartholomew McGowan. She was a proud graduate of St. Patrick Catholic Grade School, Pueblo Catholic High, and the University of Northern Colorado.
Maggie was an Irish powerhouse, always on the go. She loved to travel. She visited almost every continent in the world, from Hong Kong in Asia, to Mexico, South America, Africa and Europe, including, of course, Ireland. Irrespective of the location, her favorite trips were always with her children.
She was also a force to be reckoned with in her career. She taught at Seton High School and then moved on to teach middle school. Later, she became the CEO of the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center, where she worked for 38 years. She raised millions of dollars for the Center, obtained funding to build the Buell Children’s Museum, and secured funds to help the Arts Center remain a vibrant part of the city of Pueblo for many years post-retirement. During this period, for 40 years, Maggie was the Executive Director for Broadway Theatre League, bringing Broadway shows from New York City to Pueblo, a member of the International Women’s Foundation and the first woman on the Board of Directors for what is now U.S. Bank. Maggie was recognized with numerous civic awards, including the Mel Harmon Exceptional Service and Dedication to the Pueblo Community (1999), the Pueblo Community College Hall of Fame (2003), and the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation 2008 Annual Achievement Award.
Maggie was a political force in Pueblo. She was sought out by, and campaigned for, national Congressional and Senatorial candidates, as well as for state and local candidates. She was vibrant, confident, and opinionated. A woman ahead of her time.
Mag, as her children called her, will be deeply missed by her sons, Richard, Rod (Jan Butler), Michael (Susanne), and Mark Divelbiss (Katherine Fiore), and her daughter, Cynthia Uldrich (Jack). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren Tim (Kendall) Divelbiss, Jeff (Andrea) Divelbiss, Michelle Divelbiss (Mark Levy), Scott (Julia) Divelbiss, Thomas Divelbiss (Meghan Rhew-Divelbiss), Samantha Divelbiss (Kyle deGuzman), Alexis Divelbiss, Meghan Uldrich and Sean Uldrich, and three great grandchildren Delayne Divelbiss, Andrew Divelbiss and Kaitlyn Divelbiss. She was preceded in death by her parents Gladys and Bartholomew McGowan, and her brothers Jack and Robert McGowan.
Maggie worshiped at St. Charles Community, where she found friendship, peace and comfort. Maggie was greeted in heaven by her Irish relatives, and likely celebrated their reunion with a cocktail because “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere in the world.” Rest in peace, Maggie. You will always be remembered as a true Irish gem.

  1. Maggie was a tremendous woman. She was an incredible whirl of energy and determination. I was fortunate to have worked for her at the Arts Center among a creative and dedicated team: David, Jenny, Jim, Tim, Jeannetta,
    Cheryl, Danny, Donna, Susan, Dion,
Lori, Lorrie, LuAnn, Gary, Joe, and
Diana (and MANY others). Maggie was our fearless leader and celebrator of all visual, fine, and performing arts including Festival Fridays and so much fun, we worked very hard and had a blast. Thank you, Maggie, for all that you gave to Pueblo. ❤️

  2. I do not know her in person, but I am here to pay my respects. I hear lots of good things about her and wished I would have the chance to meet her so I can get her two cents.

  3. I’m so sorry for the loss of Maggie. I always admired her as a strong, talented, intelligent woman. Her many achievements will not be forgotten!

  4. What a great lady. Maggie was a dear friend to so many, and I know we all will miss her greatly. She was a great supporter of the University, as well as so many other organizations. We were able to present numerous joint programs, primarily as a result of her initiatives. Blessings to you, Maggie, and we all shall meet again!

  5. What a go-getter dynamo! She was certainly a force to be reconned with! She made long lasting contributions to Pueblo which we all should be proud of

  6. Maggie was truly a Pueblo Icon. I got to know Maggie through many different Boards and Social events. She was a confident, well spoken and classy lady. She will always be remembered by so many that knew and loved her.

  7. I taught calligraphy at the Arts Center for 19 years while Maggie ran the ship … what a classy hard-working woman; great leadership and work ethic all the way and every day!

  8. Maggie Divelbliss was dominant force for the City of Pueblo. She encouraged my Dad, Salvador Gallegos, to be the first representative of D-60 on the Arts Board. She always greeted everyone by their first name. To this day the Gallegos Family has supported the Arts Center. Our condolences to the Divelbliss Family. You will be missed Maggie. The Hilda Gallegos Family.

  9. Truly a Pueblo Icon who did so much to make the Arts vibrant in Pueblo. Her passion for exploration and curiosity about the world ignited many of my own passions through knowing her as a child. Brava, Maggie. Amazing woman indeed.

  10. My mom, Shirley Cline, was a good friend of Maggie’s.
Maggie was one of my teachers at Seton High School. She expected the best out of you. She was tough and fair. What a great teacher!
    Rest in peace.

  11. Maggie was a woman of grace and grit. Her smile lit up a room and made everybody feel seen. She was so in love with the arts and worked to bring the best of art to Pueblo and to bring Pueblo’s artists to exhibit. Maggie made her mark. It was an honor to know and work with Maggie.

  12. Maggie was ONE in a million. A FORCE OF NATURE!
Pueblo was blessed to have her and her legacy will live on for generations!
    Rest in Peace!
    Martha

  13. I also met Mrs. Divelbiss as a student at Seton High. She was an ultimate role model and an inspiration every day of her life. I will never forget her. RIP.

  14. There are few Puebloans who have given so much to our community, as Maggie. What a woman! I was always a little intimidated by her because her enthusiasm, prestige, and classy style were unparalleled!
She was a force and you didn’t say no to her! I was honored when she asked me to sing for the Arts Center 25th anniversary gala. And after a Press Club Sheepdip event many years ago, she came with a few us for some after-event drinks and I sat next to her in the booth. I couldn’t believe I was having drinks with Maggie, sitting right next to me!
What a classy broad! What a legend…what an icon. I’m honored that she included me in her orbit.
Cheers, dear Maggie, there will never be another one like you❤️

  15. I first met Maggie when the festival Fridays were in the beginning stages on the steps at the arts center. Working in the school district, were both shared a bond that continued for several years. Whenever something needed to be done or if we needed something for festival Fridays, Maggie told us to come see her directly or have someone page her. It was an honor & pleasure to work at such a high class place, with the classiest lady running it. RIP Dear lady. You were the best. ❤️🙏🏻💔

  16. I met Mrs. Divelbiss as a student at Seton High School. Maggie was such a great role model to young women! She was so smart, classy and fun. Her life was anything but normal! What a woman!
