 Marvin Steward

Born in Pueblo Colorado 1944

1962 graduate of Central High School; attended five years at Pueblo Junior College which became Southern Colorado State College now Colorado State University - Pueblo. 1969 graduate of the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. 

Career

Marvin began his career in the funeral business in 1966 when he worked for the Rouch family at their funeral home. He was an apprentice for two years at the Rouch Funeral Home and graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1969. He returned to continue working for the Rouch Family business. Marvin and Gerry Montgomery, who both worked for the Rouch family, formed a partnership in 1986 to purchase the funeral home. The funeral home was then renamed Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors. It is the only Pueblo funeral home owned and operated by lifetime Puebloans. In 1996, the partners were selected by the City of Pueblo to operate and manage Mountain View Cemetery, the city-owned cemetery. Marv manages the cemetery’s day-to-day operations while Gerry & his wife, Dian, manage and coordinate the funeral home. Marv still goes to the funeral home each night and on weekends after closing the cemetery office and works behind the scene to assist in the funeral home operation of providing personalized service to all the families we are privileged to serve. 

The funeral home underwent a massive expansion in 2006, adding a Kids’ Kove, state of the art audio-visual center with closed circuit TV throughout the facility, banquet room, handicapped accessible facility and additional state rooms. 

Community Involvements

  • Board member of the Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center 
  • Member of several of the Masonic organizations and Past Master of So. Pueblo Lodge #31, A.F. & A.M. in 1976 then served the Grand Lodge of Colorado as District Lecturer for 3 years and was honored to be elected to several offices in the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Colorado for 5 years. 
  • Member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Pueblo’s exclusive member in both the Selected Independent Funeral Homes and the International Order of the Golden Rule. 

Supporter 

  • Established and maintained the Grief Support Library at Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care and is a sponsor of its Children’s Clouds to Rainbows and Teens’ Bereavement Groups and the annual benefit golf tournament for past 18 years. 
  • Sponsored educational programming and annual fund-raising auction for KTSC-TV PBS station. 
  • Provides funding for Pueblo Choral Society, Pueblo Symphony Orchestra, Buell Children’s Museum, Pueblo Municipal Band, Pueblo Zoological Society, Optimist Club of Pueblo, Broadway Theatre League and Center Stage. 
  • Many other community organizations and events.

Career 

Following his high school graduation, Gerry began his career by working as a mortuary science apprentice at the former Rouch Funeral Home. While apprenticing he also studied pre-mortuary science at the University of Southern Colorado. Gerry went on to graduate in 1979 from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science and returned to the funeral home. 

After Gerry and Marvin Steward, purchased the Rouch Funeral Home in 1986 they renamed it Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors. It is the only Pueblo funeral home owned and operated by lifetime Puebloans. 

In 1996, they were selected by the City of Pueblo to manage Mountain View Cemetery, the city-owned cemetery.

1975 gold cord graduate Pueblo Central High School; BSBA degree in accounting from University of Southern Colorado, now Colorado State University-Pueblo. Obtained a Colorado insurance producers license in 1996 and continuing education courses to maintain insurance license status.

Married Gerry J. Montgomery on March 17, 1997 

Career 

At 17, Dian began working at the former Wheelstar Corporation, a railroad service company. She become the company’s controller and worked there for 22 years. She joined Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors in 1996 and became a co-owner in 2006. 

Community Involvement 

  • As a life member of Assistance League Pueblo in 1998-1999 & 2004-2005 Holiday Fashion Preview Program Chairperson. 2002-2005 Public Relations Chair
